No power to Ranger fuel pump

The fuse and relay have been tested. There actually is 5 volts at the fuel pump.
The truck was running OK when the clutch went out. It wouldn't start after the clutch was replaced. The inertia switch is OK. I don't know where to look now Any help will be appreciated.

The Ranger is a 1998 3.0. The bed is off, the fuel pump runs when connected to 12v

With the key on engine off you need to ground the fuel pump pin in the EEC4 test connector. (Google it) This will keep the pump circuit hot so you can test for 12 volts starting at the inertia switch

The wire connecting the pump relay to the inertia switch is orange/blue stripe

Just tested voltage at inertia switch, got 6.7 volts, haven't tried grounding that pin in the test connector. what should I do next?

OOPs, my apoligies somehow i read 1988 instead of 1998. Your 98 is wired completly different from an 88. Check out the link that spooktn gave you & if theres a fuel pump relay in the circuit try changing it.

Just took a quick look at the link that spooktn mentioned (thanks spooktn/Pawpaw) some Fords do & some dont use a fuel pump relay. This 98 does have a pump relay. It's number 5 under the hood in the power dist box.
Number 7 is the horn relay, if it's identical to number 5 swap them with each other and see if your fuel pump works.

According to the owners manual, relay number 9 is for the fuel pump. I have removed it, connected 12 volts and it worked OK. Should I replace it anyway?
Could the whole problem be a bad system ground?

I see the online diagrams dont agree with your owners manual??? Go figure.
Try removing the lid from the relay box & flip it over. If theres a diagram look at the pump relay & the horn relay & if they are identical swap them with each other & see what happens. If not the horn relay maybe the AC or wiper relay is identical. Just dont use the PCM power relay.

Sometimes the power box or fuse box contacts can become dirty,,, you might want to remove battery neg and spray the socket that the relay plugs into with a good electrical cleaner,,, wait 15 minutes or so replace relay and then put battery cable back on,,, might help,,,cant hurt LOL

Another thing is to remove the pump relay, leave the key off & probe for 12 volts at the relay mount. If it's also only 6 volts check at the fuse.

If you have 12 volts coming into the relay, but only 6 volts at the inertia switch the relay is probably not passing the full 12 volts.

And each time you turn the key from off to run you should get 12 volts for 2 seconds at the inertia switch and then the PCM times out and opens the relay.

Thanks for all your help. We will get this solved. Spooktn, you suggested spraying the contacts. What would you use? I'd probably use WD40. I am waiting for my helper to try your suggestions 87XLT, it is his truck. I'm going out and hook up the cherry picker and

I just looked on Amazon, there are lots of contact cleaners, from $5.00 to over $100. I'll go shop around. WD40 contact cleaner is one of the expensive one.
