First 6.0 Diesel and need some advice

Hey guys, so I just bought an 06 F250 6.0 with 170K. It's pretty much stock with the exception of an egr delete. The previous owner told me he's never had any problems with it for all 170K (He was the original owner). He used it to tow his boat around apparently. Question is if it's gone 170k without any major problems, should I be "fine" for another 20-30k before I consider bulletproofing it, or is it too risky? Should I just spend the money to bulletproof it soon? This is my first diesel truck at 17, so I'm still learning alot Any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks!

Welcome aboard johnsparks302. I know you are itching to do things to you truck, we all were. 1st thing I would do is change the oil and filter. Use shell Rotella T6 5w40 and a Motorcraft oil filter. Flush the cooling system and use a Cat ec1 spec coolant. Change the fuel filters. One on top of engine and one under drivers side frame. Only use Motorcraft. Now you are learning about your truck. Get a data reader, Forscan or Toque pro.and a adapter. On Amazon Look for one that is an ELM327 V1.5 Bluetooth standard OBDII plug it likely will say it speaks all protocals (ours is Can Bus). Then you can really learn how to take care of your truck. You will really love the 6.0. Great engine

Welcome to FTE.
As Tideman says get the fluids changed and only use OEM filters that way you have a baseline for your maintenance schedule. Read the tech folder at the top of the thread list so you are familiar with what you have and what too watch for.
As for the bulletproofing some will say "if it ain't broke don't fix it". If you tune with a programmer and don't watch your temps and boost levels is when you will run into problems and bulletproof a lot sooner than later.
And if you don't know ask the people on this site know what they are talking about and always glad to help.

Third on the "if it ain't broke don't fix it".

I've got 235k on the odometer on original head bolts.

Get a way to monitor the gauges and that'll give you an idea of health of all the systems. You really need to know the condition of the oil cooler and EGR chamber. Keep those happy, and use Motorcraft or Racor filters (they make the motorcraft) (fuel every 10k, oil every 5k, tranny every 30 to 40k) and that'll go a long way to a long and happy life.

Every time I consider pushing my fuel filters to 15k, I stop and say "WHY??"

Thanks for all the reply's guys! All the regular maintenance on the truck was done by a ford tech with all Ford parts including filters and all. Written on the top of the windshield inside the truck is an odometer reading for the next oil and filter change as well as the next fuel filter change. They were all done only about 2K miles ago, so I'll probably just replace them after the mileage you guys gave me. The truck does have some sort of "Edge" product under the hood. I don't know if It's a tuner, or what. It's not powering on or anything when the truck is running. I can post some pictures when I get the chance.
