Unhappy Really need help 351m or 400

hey guys,
I really need some help here, I am pulling my hair out. I have a 77 F-250 4x4. I have two engines, both need rebuilt. I have a stock 351m and I have a 400. The 400 has been bored, the tag says .030, but the pistons have 40 stamped on top of them. It also says the rods and mains have been turned .010. I took the 400 out because a rod bearing went out. I have a budget of 750.00. I want an engine that runs good, with more power/torque than factory. Which engine should I re-build? What aftermarket parts will improve performance? I am looking at an edelbrock performer 400 intake and 600 or 650 carb. Will these help? I am a single dad and need to get this truck back on the road. Oh yeah, it has a 4spd transmission. Thanks for any input. Boog

If you're suspicious about the 400 block then I'd take the 400 crank, get new pistons and build the 351M into a 400. Take the best parts of of each engine and you'll end up with a strong 400 with much more torque than the 351M as well as HP. $750 is a very tight budget for even a basic rebuild especially if you plan on adding new performance pieces but if you do most of the work yourself you might get close to that. You might try looking on eBay for the manifold and carb.

Hey Bill, what would you say would be a max. turn limit on one of these cranks?

I'm comfortable with 10 or 20 on any crank. I'd start getting nervous around 30 or 40.

As far as a cheap intake goes i would check the classifieds here and @ projectbronco.com. They seem to go cheaper in the classifieds.

Hey boogan1,
I don't normally even suggest this kind of thing, because I believe if you build it yourself at least you'll know what you have, but it sounds like your really in a bind. First off, I've never dealt with this company and don't know any more than what I've read on their website, but the warranty does sound pretty good. This could give you a reliable engine at somewhere near your budget. You can always build it a little stronger later. I don't think you can build one for what they're selling them for.

My machine shop told me that going .020 over on the crank would actually make it stronger if they put a proper radius on the edges.
