2011 F-150 with 5.0--Any big Issues?

Hi guys.
My brother texted me tonight and asked what I knew about the 5.0. I told him I'd post and get back to him. He is looking to trade for one with 93,000 miles. So I was wondering, are there any common major issues with this engine in this model year? Anything that he should listen or look for. He was a Ford guy for a long time then for some reason bought a 2007 GMC, I think he got a sweet private party price, so I'd love to see him go back Ford if this is a good engine. Thanks for any replies!!!!

My 2013 5.0 has 55K on it without any problems. But I think there were some engines that had an out of round cylinder hole in the block. Not sure what years.

Some 2011-12s with the 5.0 had some problems with the out of round cylinders. it sounds like popsicle sticks tapping, and most of the time its been the #4 cylinder. and if it gets bad enough it will use oil. think by 2013, Ford pretty much fixed it

I have had a 2012 Super Crew with the 5.0 that I bought new 4 years ago, and haven't had any issues. It has 59,000 on it, and has been a very good truck.

I also recently bought a 2011 Super Cab XL with 5.0 and 76,000 miles to use as a second vehicle, and my mechanic said it checked out fine. The truck sounds good and is solid.

I think the 5.0 is a solid engine choice.

Based on what we're read here on FTE, there were some early 5.0's with cylinder distortion issues and some where the water pumps needed replacing early. Several users on here have gotten new engines under warranty.

I think these issues are all gone now. And like anything else, the internet should not be the only source of research. No one comes here to give praise to their product or it's builder, just to find solutions.

I'm on my 2nd Super Crew with the 5.0, and I love these trucks and engines. And good on fuel. I do a mix of city and hiway driving, and will alway's get an average of 17 & 18 mpg. I've seen as high as 22.3, cruise at 62 in a 55, with 4 adults, and luggage.
My first truck was a 2011, Super Crew, 5.0. We bought it used with 18K on the clock, and drove it until a few tree's fell on it during a storm in Gatlinburg Tn, in July. I hit 50 K driving home.
When the insurance company made the decision to total it out, I absolutely had to have another. So we replaced it with a 2013 F150, again, it had to have the 5.0, and Super Crew.
If a couple of large Hemlock Tree's can fall on it, totaling it out, and STILL drive it home over 5 hours, yes I wanted another.
Drive that 5.0, and be sure to kick it in the pants at least once really hard. When he hears that Coyote 5.0 growl, I promise you, he'll grin ear to ear as I did.

Let us know how the decision goes.

Unk Bob

40k on my '13 5.0. Like the engine and power. Drive in mixed conditions with a fairly heavy foot and averaging about 16-18 MPG realistically w/ 3.55 gears. Couple warranty issues (non engine specific). I might be developing the cylinder distortion mentioned above. No loss in power or oil consumption, just a light "tapping" when up to temp. Happens randomly. Waiting for it to happen more regularly before taking it in.

103,000 on my '13 5.0 and zero problems.

However, as was mentioned, the '11s had rampant issues across Ford's entire lineup of vehicles. That was a bad year for Ford. If I bought one of that model year, I'd get a good extended warranty to go with it. Those model years also had a couple of issues with the transmission too. Leaking of the bulkhead connector, corrosion of internal connections causing 6th to 1st downshifts at highway speeds, etc.

I'll second that about the 2011 5.0's, but I will add that I believe the transmission issue is being covered under a recall that is soon to be released. Check the Car Fax, if the engine in this prospective truck has already had major work or replacement for the above mentioned problems, then you should be golden. Start the truck, if you hear any strange tapping noises at start up, walk away.

I purchased a used 2011 F150 2 months ago with 123K. Pristine truck, runs perfect and I have had zero issues so far. I've put about 5K on it so far.

thanks for all the replies, you guys are great. I passed all the info along to my brother, have to see what happens, it was a truck he was interested in trading for so who knows if they get together on a deal or not. That sucks about those trees there in Gatlinburg ubereal2. I've been on vacation down there three years ago now, very fun place to go, beautiful, cool town. And Pigeon Forge is cool (but very pricey) if you got kids. Great eating there too.

We like Pigeon Forge too. Our favorite place to eat is at The Old Mill Restaurant.

I have a 2011 Ford F -150 5.0L 4x4 and I'm up to 40,000 miles and I only replace my oil filter and oil , I'm still on original factory parts . But some 5.0L have a valve problem, which Ford will fix ,

Transmisson. Faulty pan filter

I have a 2011 v8 and my transmission was doing funny stuff that alot of members mention in the forums i have read. Well after changing sensor a few times, at 100 thousand i decided to change tranny fluids and clean up the pan.. Change that filter thing in there too. To my surprise it fell out of its proper place and was just sitting at the bottom of the pan??? Well i have had this happen a third time since then and i have to do it a 4th time and i am with 260 thousand km. Each time i have replaced the filter is what i call it. I tell all f150 owners i meet and several have found the same issue. Save you tranny fluid for re-use. If anyone is having tranny problems.. Check there first!!!
