Leaking Gear Oil at Pinion Seal

The mystery part is a washer that is seated behind the companion flange.

I just replaced my seal and it wasn't too bad to do. a puller is needed to get the yoke off. but after it was off all you have to do is pull the old seal and tap in a new one. new seal at o,reallys was 9 bucks.
