Need More Oomph

What I've got is a '66 F250 4X4 that I built a 410 for. Current specs/mods are as follows:

9.2:1 compression
4.080 bore (technically a 416)
Elgin E-966-P cam SPECS
C4AE heads harden seats, stock valves
ARP rod bolts
Oiling mods
"T" code 4bbl intake
670 CFM Holley
Sanderson headers into 2 1/2" dual straight through exhaust (magnaflows)

It runs good, lots of power, pulls hard, etc. It seems that of late though, I have found myself hooked onto a trailer more and more often. It does well, and will out pull most of the stock diesels until you get up into the early 2000's range. That being said, I need more. Most people tell me to just get a new truck, but I have had a couple of newer trucks but end up selling them because I prefer Old Green.

So what's the best way to go about getting more snort out of my FE? I don't know where I am at power wise right now but I would like another 50 to 100 horsepower and ft. lbs. of torque. Since I use it to tow, The best place to have that power would be between 2 and 4 thousand RPM.

What are my options? Better heads and intake? Stroker kit? Is what I am asking for even feasible from an FE?

My first thought was a diesel swap but something about the FE's just turns my crank.

the edelbrock rpm intake and more stroke would be in order, kinda dig 3.98 already though.

I have thought about a set of cleaned up Edelbrock heads and intake, but I am unsure if I would see much benefit below 4,000 RPM.

<p>What rear gear ratio do you have? When towing, it's all about torque-to-the-ground. If you went from, let's say, 3.73 to 4.10, that's a 10% increase in torque to the ground all across the board. (4.10 divided by 3.73 comes out to 1.099 - that's 109.9%, hence the 10% (rounded up) increase I'm talking about).</p><p>Wow, this says you have 3.54s? https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...has-begun.html - nice tranny, BTW </p><p>That's a pretty high gear for the highway when towing.</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

Wow, this says you have 3.54s? https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...has-begun.html - nice tranny, BTW
That's a pretty high gear for the highway when towing.
Thanks

I was originally going to swap to 3.54's after I put the five speed in (that's the reason I put the five speed in so I could still have a low first) but I liked the way it ran and pulled with 4.10's so I just never got around to swapping in 3.54's.

I don't think I would want to go any lower as I still occasionally make a run on the interstate and 80 MPH is almost 3600 RPM as is. That, and with the closer gears in the five speed, I can just shift down.

It is set up to tow well and it does. I just want a little more...

<p>Ah well, it was an idea. We get this question in the v10 forum a lot - the answer almost always is, change the gearing. You've already done that </p><p>The exhaust valves you have in those heads are 1.560&quot;? The 1.650&quot; CJ-size exhaust valve will definitely help, and maybe a slightly bigger carb, the intake would probably help as well.</p><p>But asking for up to 100HP and 100ft/lbs of torque is a tall order. Without radically changing the torque curve (dropping the low RPM power), I'm not sure you're going to get there.</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

Dang it. That's kinda what I figured but it never hurts to ask, right?

445 stroker with xe262 cam, big valves and some cleanup on your heads or stock Edelbrock heads.

good luck, I fully appreciate enjoying the old truck and trying to keep it on the level.

289hp @3500
500 tq @2000

DD5 is about 5-7% high on TQ numbers for the FE engines

Wow, those are some impressive torque numbers but I thought horsepower would have been better.

Any chance you could run a longer (4.375") stroke after the heads and intake? I really appreciate your time.

Not from a fancy Dyno computer program but from real engines built by Barry all with basic edelbrock heads and a fresh build:
