96 7.3 5 speed manual question??

OK guys my flywheel inspection cover on my 96 7.3 5 speed manual transmission finally gave up the ghost and broke.

My question is just what does Ford call this thing? I've looked all over ebay and the internet and can't find one. I've always called them flywheel inspection cover or inspection plate.

Does anyone know where I can get one, about how much do they cost and doe they make a heavy duty one not prone to breaking?

Can't be that expensive to ship. If you get an old one, it has a flange that faces forward, and when it's installed, it's so close to the engine oil pan that it can cut through the pan over time. New improved OEM version doesn't have the flange. If you get an old one, you can trim/grind it off.

But I gotta wonder, how did you break yours? Off-roading?

No I'm too old for off roading, but I do live on a dirt road about 2 miles worth, I guess it just vibrated and broke off one side. So just what is the technical name for those things, I can't find one listed anywhere on the internet???

I'll *TRY* to remember to check the FSM tonight, to see if there's a diagram with the "official" name.

I appreciate all the help, if anyone has access to fords numbers I sure would appreciate a parts number. I'm having a heck of a time locating one of these things. I haven't found one yet and that is after talking online to parts folks.

D'OH, I just remembered, there's a TSB for the issue I described above. Went over to "the stop", and sure 'nuff it's in the FAQ/TSB section - http://www.thedieselstop.com/faq/949...les/951412.pdf . Part number is in the right-hand column. Seems to go by "clutch dust cover plate" or "engine rear plate" (shrug). Looks like Sunrise Ford Parts (they're a sponsor of at least one of the truck forums has it, if you're ready for some sticker shock.

Well first of all I would like to thank all that replied, all of you really helped me a lot. It appears ford doesn't make this anymore, go figure. I'm just going to buy the one at Sunset Ford. Again thanks to all that helped me, I can always count on this website to help solve a problem.

I'll dig it out tonite, I parted out a 5 speed truck a couple years ago and since I can't throw out anything that's not broke I'm sure it's in the loft somewhere.

Dieselrod, I apolozige for jumping the gun with you. I went ahead and bought the one from Sunrise Ford. Again I apolozige. But know apparently they don't make these anymore and the one you have will be in need when another one breaks on someones vehicle. I hope we are ok?

That's fine by me, now I don't have to crawl around a bunch of stuff looking for it.
