Best source of remanufactured 5.4s

I am trying to find a quality source of remanufactured 5.4 2v. I only see negative reviews of everywhere. Has anyone had a motor from S&J Engines or Sunwest Engines. The warranty seems to good to be true at S&J. What are some other sources? I don't want a Jasper as I will be installing it myself and they seem much higher than everywhere else. What about ATK? This is a pretty expensive decision for a college student. Any advice would be good.

I will be pursuing the options of rebuilding my 5.4 with remanufactured heads, but I believe a reman would better for me.

Thank You

If money isn't it option get a new truck over new motor.

But if you just want to be up and running I'd look for an Expedition/F150 that runs/drives for about $700...Pull the motor and part what you can and you'll get the motor for free.

Another option is to check car-part.com (junkyard database) although the 5.4L goes for $800-$1200 used...

The title to thread says it is a 5.4L

It is for the white truck, i can see how a 4.6 would be easier and cheaper, but i drove a 2000 with a 5.4 since 2013 and i loved it. I never had an issue with the motor until i pulled it out of the truck. Plus I will be getting a custom tune regardless to eliminate the egr and downstream o2s and cats.

Money is a bit of an issue, but my cheap answer is buy two reman heads and put them on the 5.4 i already have. I am getting an oil analysis done to see if the coolant made it to the oil and to see a guess as to how much wear the bottom end may have. If it is a good report i will leak down test, if that is decent i will remove the heads and oil pan do a visual inspection and decide then.

I dont suspect all those test will be good, so i am trying to cover the reman option so i am prepared when i have the funds.

I believe that if I get a good quality reman, i would absolutely get the use out of the expense myself. If i can have this truck running reliably with $5000 in it i will be in good shape. I plan on keeping this for easily 100000 more miles, it may be a truck i never sell depending on my financial capabillities after i get my degree.

I thought Ford discontinued 5.4 2v crate or reman engines. If i can still get one directly from ford i would prefer that. I will have to stop by the dealer next time im around them and ask.

Yes, and I read your previous edit.

He is asking for a 5.4L and you said to pull a 4.6L out of a Crown Vic !

I was replying to that comment...And I either misread the 2nd part of your post or it was later edited.

Anyways, I think that's a good idea to find a 4.6L out of the dime-a-dozen Crown Vic. At the pick-and-pull junkyards around me they charge $150.

I think that is too much unless it is in excellent condition, lifted, mechanically perfect, with brand new mud tires on it. It is a 1999 extended cab so it really isn't worth that much!!!!!

Trying to put this politely, but if you are going to put that much into it you are better off getting an upgraded truck.

I would get upgraded truck for $5000ish even if on a loan.

Then take previous advice, throw a $200-$300 crown vic motor in it and keep as a spare...Can you flip the truck and make a $1000? If so I'd definitely do that! It does look like a decent truck, but it's 17 years old and not worth anywhere near $5000.

So I am the kind of person that will probably never sell a gun or a truck my whole life unless i buy it specifically to make a profit. I absolutely loved my 2000 F-150 and want to continue with the ugly duck 10th gens. I understand that it would be better for me financially to put the motor with oil in the coolant that runs good back into it and sell it to some chump for profit. I have no desire to do that though for multiple reasons. First of all it would be morally wrong to sell a truck to someone with a bad head or head gasket without telling them and if I told them I wouldn't make a profit. Secondly the 2000 was a graduation gift from my Grandmother. I was wanting to be able to use the engine from that truck and keep the truck going sentimentally, but it doesn't look likely, but if i keep the 1999 it would allow me to use some parts from that truck.

Finally, i don't know where you all are from, but here in central Kentucky i can't get a 4x4 F150 Supercab with a 5.4 and as little rust as this truck has and only 136000 miles and 0 miles on reman or rebuilt for less than $5500. If I wanted a crew cab those are all around $1000 more. 2004+ are never less than $9000. I love OBS Fords but I need 4 doors and 4 door OBS trucks are about as high as 04 and up trucks.

Here are some comps. These are the only ones that had minimal body rust and less than 200k on the clock.

https://lexington.craigslist.org/cto/5716550419.html

https://lexington.craigslist.org/cto/5699023327.html

Overall for a combination of actual value and theoretical sentimental value combined I think the truck would be worth $5000 especially since I will likely never sell it.

With that said, I received communication from S&J Engines about their warranty, and they said that putting the 5.4 into a truck originally equipped with a 4.6 nor getting a custom tune would void their 7 year 100,000 mile warranty. I have found very few reviews of them and the ones I did find were mixed extremely positive and extremely negative. I still will have to check with the Ford dealer to see if they will still sell them, or if they go through a supplier like ATK. I guess not many folks have gotten reman 5.4s. i am having trouble finding much info on them.

I would also say I am open to rebuilding the 5.4 I have if I can find someone localish that is high quality at a reasonable price in central Kentucky. Any recommendations their would also be appreciated.

Finally, I may just replace the heads and clean the bottom end of my current 5.4. Where is a good source of new/reman xl3e heads that i could get to put on the truck.

Thank You for the help.

I will not be putting a junkyard engine in the truck. I will more than likely not be putting a 4.6 in it either.

That would be nice, unfortunately the money I put into this truck won't be a lump sum, it will be over several months. Even if i sold this truck for $1000 profit I still wouldn't have enough cash to buy that truck outright. I am skeptical of a crew cab in that shape that cheap. I know folks who have searched specifically for 10th gen crew cabs and ended up buying one. It was $3k more. All I have seen are much closer to $7k.

Anyway, it has been established that this is not the best financial option. I am okay with that. Once it is complete it will be a vehicle I like and I have worked on myself and know very well. i am leaning more towards replacing just the heads on my current 5.4 and working on the bottom end myself. What is a good source of reman xl3e heads. I know someone has replaced heads before with no junkyard heads.
