Time for a turbo rebuild?

Well, while data logging some intake & manifold temps today my turbo started making that psst, pssst, pssst sound and I would loose just about all boost. Let of the throttle and ramp her up again but if I gave her too much throttle she would just start going psst, psst, psst like a pressure cooker. I caught it on AE and used ExPaCampers program to graph it up.......I better take it apart before something worse presents itself.......damn

Looks like its a boost leak. Have you check for any leaks?

it sure does Adam, but she's only loosing boost when she makes the psst, psst pressure cooker sound. Then once I let off for a bit she's zip right back up.......I'm not sure what it might be though.

no black smoke, EGT's never went over 900 F.

At what pressure does it start to make the noise?

When my clamp was loose, my turbo would spool fine up to a certain psi, then drop off. Maybe you will get lucky and find a leak?

The last 6.0 turbo I saw "go" spiked EGTs to 1400F+ and threw oil out the exhaust. But that was combined with a head gasket, too.

This is on your 7.3L, right?

This has the distinct aroma of compromised CAC boot, but we can't completely rule out the intake plenum seal. I'd break out the leak tool and Simple Green to focus on the boots first.

yesterday the first time was at around 14-15 psi, after that as low as 3-5 psi IIRC.

Rich- If you can get a few mins BEFORE taking it camping, pull the intake and eyeball the wheel. Make SURE you aren't looking at a time bomb

Good That's why I recommend everyone have TWO Ford Diesels, LOL!

Have fun camping! We're headed for the wilderness float this weekend. 3 days in canoes and all night on shore. No sleeping allowed! My Excursion is towing a modified camper for cargo and 4 canoes

Garage time is fun, but gotta stretch her legs once in a while, too.

Well, I'm not sure if it was a single issue or if it was multiple ones. It took long enough to get it done but, new up-pipes, van turbo rebuild with a new Riff Raff compressor wheel, new EBP sensor and new AIS filter.

She's golden again!

Just about, last summer I knew something was up. Drove fine around town but a bit sluggish towing or on the highway. Then last fall I started smelling some exhaust so I thought up- pipes. Long story short, she went into storage from November to March for the winter. Got the other pipes done in April, the rest done in June after my daughters graduation and our German exchange student's parents visit. I actually thought about selling her, then I had a beer and thought otherwise

Looks good! Also, it does not matter how long the task takes or how it is accomplished, just that it is done and the truck is better for it afterward...

Good job ex-Okie! And I admire the family priorities. If you're like me it's hard to believe how quickly they grow up. I did my pipes a couple years back but now I am in the psst psst psst group. Sometimes just getting on the Interstate without a load it will do it. Factory turbo unmoloested with just over 201,000. I'm thinking time for a rebuild or upgrade.
