99 F250 SD Ex 4x4 V10 intermittent no start (update-is it the keys??)

Please excuse my repair ignorance, I generally just do my own very basic repairs. This problem has both me and the 2 repair shops who checked it baffled. I've seen some posts about similar issues with other 150s and 250s but not exactly this.

99' F250 has been intermittently not starting, both cold and warm. Might happen often within a span of a few weeks, then starts fine awhile (maybe even couple of months), then does it again. When it starts doing this, it might start after trying again right away or after waiting awhile. A few times it also stopped shortly after starting to drive but I was able to get it to the side of the road. Sometimes using the extra key started it back up right away but that doesn't happen most times.

It does not turn over at all. The dash lights turn on and stay on as normal and "dings" like it should, can hear it click under dash, and can hear the fuel pump.

No codes showed up. First mechanic couldn't find anything obvious or replicate problem. Changed air and fuel filters (fuel filter really needed changed), plugs. Got truck back and it wouldn't start next morning. He checked it again and got a code related to ignition, tried the spare key and it started up. Truck back home, next day same problem.

Mechanic 2 checked, no codes, kept several days but, of course, couldn't replicate problem. I'm not even sure what all they checked, used to be an excellent repair place but now they seem to only really on diagnostics and throw up their hands, very disappointing.

Replaced solenoid and starter last year myself. Looked for loose/corroded wires under dash, to starter, and didn't see anything but I admit I'm still new to looking for more than the basic things.

It started this again yesterday after 3 months of no problems and still won't turn over this morning (again, dash lights, fuel pump, come on). Anyone experience this or have ideas where to start? Thanks for ideas.

Just to add, just went out to try again (after no turn over yesterday and earlier today) and it started fine, 4 times over. So tried the second key, no start. Tried the first key again, no start.

Could this be something within the keys, or what would I be looking at on the truck that might be related? The manual is very vague and I really don't understand if/how any antitheft system works on these.

Thanks for any suggestions. I'm really trying to figure this out on my own due to finances.

Ugh, thanks, I didn't think so but found some places online that say it does have a transponder key, and the first mechanic had us try the other key (which sometimes does the trick). I'm at a complete loss. Sorry for being dense, I'm just trying to figure out what next since I don't have anyone to help or show me.

IF you mean no starter engagement when trying to start??

I have a lazy shift lever in my '99 F350. Sometimes, I have to pull the shifter "up" to be able to start it.
I had adjusted the "clip" on the transmission to try to make the shifter's position closer to the actual P-R-N-D indicator on the column.

I view this as an "anti-theft" device now.

A random dying on the road while driving, "could" be a heavy set of keys pulling the ignition switch "just enough" to indicate shut-off.
I have seen this happen - but not sure it was on a Ford.. (long time ago)

I will try to keep this short. The door remotes quit functioning on my 99. Research led me to a 1 year only [assembled in 04/98] item called " remote anti theft personality device". Can anybody elaborate on the anti theft part? May be related?
