C6 verses E40D questions

I have a 1988 F350 single wheel 4x4 with 351W,C6,and 4.10s that I am putting back together. I am going back and fourth between swapping in a overdrive trans while its apart or leaving the C6 for now. The questions that I have for this post is what advantages does a locking converter have, what exactly does it do ? I have found thru reading the the C6 has a non locking converter and that allows the converter to slip ? How does the C6 compare to the E40D in terms of strength ?

An unlocked torque converter relies on a fluid coupling to transmit torque. The input drives fluid against the output, and that makes the output move. There is a lot of slip along with the movement. That slip is engine power being turned into heat instead of turning the wheels.

A lockup converter has a clutch inside that will engage and eliminate slip. I've measured as much as a 3 MPG improvement just from a lockup converter. That doesn't take into account the overdrive ratio of the E4OD, which will add more MPG.
