Crank No Start, 2004 F350 6.0

Hello Everyone!

I've recently bought a 2004 F350 CC LB 6.0 truck, and I love it. It ran awesome, up until Sunday of this week. I went out to start the truck, and it cranked but didn't start. I thought I hadn't let the glow plugs cycle. I turned the key off, waited 10 second, cranked, no start. I thought about it for a while, tried again, and is started!? What the hell!?

I drove it 20 miles and parked it. We had a good time at the beach with my family. We got back in the truck and it started instantly and we drove home.

The next day, crank, no start. Crank, no start. And that's where I am now. Cranks awesome, doesn't fire off.

I know there are a lot of different reasons why this may occur, ranging from all different sorts of issues. I want to go about this in a methodical way, and so I've come to you guys for help.

I've checked both batteries independently and got 12.5+ volts from each one. That's as far as I've gotten.

I borrowed a Snap-On SOLUS scanner from my friend, and hooked it up to the OBD-II port and selected "CODES MENU" and ran a KOEO SELF-TEST and received the following codes:

P0261, P0264, P0267, P0270, P0273, P0276, P0279, P0282. (All 8 read, CYL INJECTOR CKT LOW)

Next, I selected DATA DISPLAY, then DRIVABILITY and received the following figures: (All while KOEO)

APP% 0.00
APP1 4.03
APP2 1.48
APP3 0.92
APP_LOW (V) .52

Can anyone please suggest which direction I should take this diagnosis next? Thanks in advance!

While I'm waiting for your awesome help guys, I decided to run FUNCTIONAL TESTS --> INJECTOR BUZZ TEST.

The scanner came back with the same codes present in the KOEO SELF-TEST, that being:

P0261, P0264, P0267, P0270, P0273, P0276, P0279, P0282. (All 8 read, CYL INJECTOR CKT LOW)

What are all of those, but at hot idle once it's run to where ECT is 190+*F?

As the truck is not starting, thus I'm not able to run it, I can't check the data sets where ECT is 190+*F.

How hot will my block heater get the coolant up too? Is it worth a shot plugging it in for a few hours, then running the tests again?

For reference, on Tuesday, I did plug it in overnight and I got the same "Crank, No Start" condition.

Your post seemed to say it was running intermittently. What's ICP_DSD, ICP_PRESS, ICP_V, INJ_PRS_REG and FICMMPWR when cranking?

SYNC should be "YES" or "1" at some point while cranking also.

I'll have to get back to you with the answer to this. I need to let the batteries sit on a charger for a while, as I managed to drain them well enough to no longer crank.

Truck started...

I had the batteries on a charger at 10amp for an hour, and 2amp for 2 more hours after that.

I turned the key and the truck cranked over very fast but didn't start. I cycled the glow plugs a second time, and the truck fired up! It idled well initially, but then started to idle a bit rough at which point I decided to stop annoying my neighbors at nearly mid-night, and shut the truck off.

Unfortunately, I did not have the scanner on, and was not able to check the ICP_DSD, ICP_PRESS, ICP_V, INJ_PRS_REG and FICMMPWR

I'll fire it up in the morning (hopefully), and hit it with the scanner to get those numbers for you.

The batteries are both new as of 7/14 (according to the stickers on the batteries), but the previous owner was quite upfront in that he didn't drive the truck much in the past 9 months, a it has only been driven about 12k miles in the past 4 years. This would lead me to infer that the batteries have NOT been well maintained, and may have been damaged after sitting so long.

OR, the batteries are totally fine, and the alternator is not charging correctly. I'll check the alternator output tomorrow while it's running, (provided I get it started again), and I'll have to have the batteries load tested at an auto parts store as well.

I hope to take care of this first thing in the morning, but I'm headed to an early afternoon wedding tomorrow so I might be partying too hard.

Thanks for your help!

Do these numbers look good?

I bought a SCAN GAUGE II today as well and hooked it up. No codes from it. Alternator is charging at 13.4v and batteries were both load tested and were pronounced in good condition.

Truck currently starts and runs great. No problems now. I'm just paranoid I guess and would love to have some reassurance if anyone thinks these numbers look good.

Thanks!
