I got a chance to get 1996 AWD Aerostar. Seems to run good.
Any thoughts on if they are any good or too many problems.
I have 2 Aerostar vans but they are 2 wheel drive.
Not a lot of problems. One issue however is the splines on the front driveshaft can seize, which puts extra strain on the front u joint. Not a big issue, if you grease it good its not going to cause problems. Also if the speed sensor goes bad, then the AWD may act up and lock when you are doing tight turns. Overall, I had two and used them pretty hard and didn't have too many issues.
Overall the AWD Aerostars didn't have too many problems.
Danger be carefull when changing a tire it will roll. It even tells you that in the owners manual. You would think awd and park your in good shape no. I don't know if it's because my 94 has an open rear but if you jack up the right rear she rolls away. You need a good set of wheel chicks.
You should park on a level surface and apply the parking brakes any time you want to jack up any vehicle. Even a Traction-Lok rear end is not going to keep a car from rolling if you don't use the parking brake. The clutch pack will only apply about 40 lbs-ft of torque, so it won't take much to overcome it.
Wheel "chicks"? Where to I meet one of those? (jk)
