Is a Third Brake Light required by law?
It is against Federal law to alter safety equipment designed by the OEM unless it is certified, done by a certified dealer, or has DOT approval. Hence, the 3rd brake light has to be replicated, no matter what state you live in, and the lamp itself has to be DOT approved.
In today's society, if someone rear ends your five foot wide by six foot high truck and if all your factory safety equipment was not working or visible, it is conceivable you might be found partly at fault for the accident.
In some states (probably not NC) they call for a DOT inspection of your vehicle in any accident with injuries.
