Alternator & Pulley

Guys, I have a 69 f100 with a 390 and recently noticed that the alternator bearing is worn, so I bought a new (reman) one that was listed for my truck (Remy 20184) but it's too deep and won't fit. Also, it didn't come with the 2 groove pulley that was shown in the picture.

Although I've read the 3G threads, I'd be happy to stick with a 1G system, but preferably with a higher than stock output (60-65A maybe). I use an electric choke and it works far better connected to the stator connection on the back of the alt than to a full 12v feed so don't want to lose that.

Can anyone recommend an alternator that will definitely fit? I'm told that the Remy 20155 and 20514, which are also listed for my truck will fit as they are not as deep as the higher output 20184....but nobody seems to have the exact dimensions.

I measure just 11cm from where the alternator mounts to the bracket to the head so the replacement can't be any deeper than the one on there now. One of my problems I guess is that I don't know whether my current setup is stock or not - maybe it's been altered and that's why the alternator I bought didn't fit?

Also I'd like to buy a 2 groove pulley (or get an alternator that comes with one) so that I can utilize the spare groove on the fan pulley.

I've posted some pictures below....does this look like a standard setup (notice how tight the current alt fits)...any suggestions for which alternator/pulley to get and where from? I'm in the UK so with the price of shipping and crappy exchange rate I can't afford to make any more mistakes!

Why cant you space it out and use a bigger alt and the front groove of the pulley?

Running 2 belts? Why?

Ok....

Your trying to replace your alternator, so you bought a different one, for who knows what, and your surprised it doesn't fit?

The reason your choke works "better" on the stator is because that's a 15-16v output instead of 12v. Your running more power to it.

Get a 3G. They're cheap at the junkyard, and you have your choice of 95 or 130 amps. Only 2 wires to hook up and your all set.

Okay, thanks for your reply, but.....I didn't just buy any alternator, the one I bought was listed for my truck on Rock Auto and in my experience what they list usually fits. I've bought loads of parts from them over the last few years. Just to add, I would normally check dimensions before hitting 'buy' but I couldn't find them anywhere...only for the packaged size.

Also, one of the biggest issues I've had with electric chokes is them heating up and opening much too quickly when connected to a 12v switched supply. However, the stator output actually provides less (not more) voltage (I think it's either 7v or 9v) and that works a lot better for me and slows the opening enough so that it can properly do its job.

I am somewhat tempted by a 3G alt, but probably not as easy to find in junk yards over here...though possible I guess. I'd prefer to buy off the shelf really, but only if I can be sure of the fit beforehand.

Ah, I misunderstood. My apologies.

Well, I'm still not surprised. That's a gamble you take everytime you try to replace parts with different ones.

I see now you're over in Europe. While it may be a little more difficult to locate one in a junkyard, I still recommend doing so, because you need the wiring harness to go with it. Buying that separately might be pretty expensive or hard to find.
