HPOP Reservoir Level

I have read that 1/2" to 3/4" below the top of the reservoir is normal for these trucks. Mine seems to sit at 1 1/4" all of the time and it takes 5 seconds or more of cranking for the truck to start. What should I look at to correct the HPOP level issue?

Thanks,
Mark

Mark, I had something similar years ago, and what I did was remove the "check ball" mechanism. It's a 3/8 square plug, to the right of the hpop. Thought maybe something was in there, keeping the ball from totally seating. Since then(knock on wood) it's maintained that 1/2-3/4in fluid depth

It's always been my understanding the that check ball is what is supposed to keep the reservouir full, keeping it frome leaking back to the LPOP & pan.

Do you mean that plug that goes straight down into the top of the block under the HPX hose? And what is down there, just a spring and a ball? Would I have to drain the oil out of the HPOP reservoir first to avoid a mess, or will the oil just drain down if I crack the plug first?

Yup, that's the location. I don't recall draining the hpop when removing the plug

OK, I pulled the plug, spring and ball out of my spare engine to see what it's like. It looks like there is an O-ring down where the ball sits. Does that O-ring get replaced? It looks like a tough nut way down in that hole.

I had an issue where mine had long starts that just got longer then no start. I would say 95% of the time the check ball is not the issue. I replaced mine and the spring. I could not figure out how to get the seat out. There is not an oring. Ford could not tell me how to get it out. Nobody else I talked to knew anything either. After months of trying to figure it out I looked down in the engine cover to watch for any oil leaking. I noticed a small trail coming out of the front HPOP seal. Someone else noticed in a pic that the seal had been pushed out. I sent the pump back to Joey at TE and he rebuilt it for me. No probs now. Up until that point no one else had posted anything like this on FTE that I could find.

BTW .... IIRC the check ball doesn't keep it from draining completely, which mine would eventually do. At some point it will quit draining if the fro t seal is good. Its called a quick fill check ball. I have pics of the back of the pump and chambers if anyone is interested.

Post #48 shows where my pump was leaking. However this whole thread is a good read for anyone experiencing low hpop levels. There are pics of the check ball and oil passages. I went through the whole thing trying to find my problem.
