Possible new truck
I'm looking at a 2004 F250 XLT super cab 4x4 with a 5.4L with only 50k on the clock. It looks to be in great shape and drives good with only a few issues. Cruise doesn't work, it pulls to the left a little, and it has a slight roar coming from the left front wheel. Other than that it seems to be a nice truck. Its blue and grey two tone.
Anything else I need to look at before pulling the handle on this one?

flood evidence
leaking head gasket
ticking sound from engine (phasors)
spark plug maint?
the service history of all fluids
theres a small external xmsn fluid filter near the right side of the radiator...has that ever been changed?
rust under truck bed...how do the cross beams look?
there are unpainted steel lines on the left rear side of the chasis beams that are for rear brakes...Ive had to replace them on every 5.4 I have owned....total brake failure when it goes out
lower the spare tire to make sure theres no tire lock on the crank
the bottle jack is in place?
check the engine oil pan for rust out...its a bear to replace
check the radiator for signs of corrosion
I would pass on it if it has a 5th wheel mount or evidence of snow plowing
a 5.4 truck is great for hauling homedepot runs, but I out grew mine pretty quick.

The truck is an 04 so it does not have cam phasers. So no need to check that. This also means it has a 4r100 transmission so it does not have the external filter by the radiator. It is also 50k away from the first factory recommended spark plug change so there most likely won't be any record of that happening yet. Luckily the 04 will have the updated heads with 8 threads per spark plug hole instead of 4 in the earlier model 2 valve heads, to help prevent plug blow outs. They also don't have the problem of the plugs breaking in the head like the 05 to mid 08 3v's did.

Have it Krown rust proofed asap. Unless you live in a dry climate. Check the rear of rear wheel well arches for signs of rot or blisters. Same for the rockers. Cruse is likely an easy fix. Either the switch below the master cylinder or the brake switch. Both parts cheap. Shouldn't be ready for front wheel bearings yet. Its more likely the outer ujoint on that side is frozen from lack of use. You really need to pull the shaft to feel the ujoint. They can look ok yet be shot....same for the front shaft ujoints. Do the hubs move freely? Service the trans fluid n filter right away. Then every 30-40K from there on.

The pulling and roar are either a hung up caliper or unit bearing. Neither is a big deal.
Check the undercarriage for rust and rot. Inner rocker, bed cross members, and bed floor are prime spots.

So they fixed everything on the truck yesterday and it runs true and strait. Thanks for all of the feedback. I did check underneath and it is clean as a new one. However, I think I'm going to pass on it as I just don't need a 250. I do travel from time to time and it is really just too much truck for me. I'm going to wait on a nice F-150 to come by. If anyone is interested, it is at Welford Harris Ford in Siler City, NC. nice truck. Thanks again for all of the feed back.

They were resurfacing their blacktop. When I went over there this morning, all the cars were back on the lot. I wish I needed a 250, it is killing me to find one with that low mileage.

Buy it. Once you do you ll never go backwards. The Old man (82) that I bought my one-owner 2011 from called me shortly after purchase and asked if Id sell it back to him. Seems his family talked him into selling it to "down size" and he regrets it. Says the 150 is not making him happy at all. Step up and just do it. You wont regret it.

I had an 04 F250 super cab short bed and the size increase from my regular cab ranger was huge, but the space was amazing. Then I traded it for an 02 F250 crew cab long bed. I will never own a smaller super duty. The longer the wheelbase, the better it rides. And I have found plenty of stuff to haul with the extra space I have!
