Fuel filler neck gromet

Fuel filler neck gromet
Hi, I have a 73 Ranchero, but I bet that many owners of same vintage Ford's have the same problem. The fuel tank has a large hole in the top for the filler neck to pass through, and there is a special rubber gromet here to seal it. This gromet has a skirt on the inside of the tank, and this together with the main part of the gromet should seal the gas into the tank.
My grommet is perrished and cracked, and when I corner to the right (my filler is on the left side of the car) the fuel leaks out and the stink of fuel gets to me inside the car. Since the exhaust system runs close to the tank, the problem could get to the point of starting a fire.
I have tried several places to find a new replacement part, but no luck. Does anyone know where I can get one?? I even tried using a fuel resistant sealing glue but that didn't work for more than 5 minutes.
Thanks Stefan

The pickups are not as you described, they have a secton of tube sticking out of the tank that a hose goes over - no grommet that I know of.
Your Ranchero sounds like the same setup that is on the '72 Mustang I was recently working on. There is a hole with rubber grommet and a metal fill tube slides inside the top of the tank. Might want to try some Mustang repo suppliers, might be the same part...
Just a thought...

Not Macs they only go to 1971 on the Ranchero. Dearborn or Autokrafters will have one. Stop by the Ranchero club someone can help you out. www.Ranchero.us

Check your rubber seal on the fuel cap itself. The fuel will slosh up against the cap since FORD screwed up and put the filler pipe too low (look at some older Rancheros - they are about 6" higher up the side). I had to buy a new cap to get a better seal. Also only filled the gas tank 1/2 full at a time.
