Receiver size

I was on chat with a representative on the build and price site and found out that my truck will have a 3" ball mount size.

That is correct. I asked Mike Levine if that's technically a Class 6 hitch receiver, he said there is no such thing as Class 6, though it is higher than a Class 5. Oh well, it will be a long time before there are 3" hitches, so plan on using the sleeves.

Rattle Rattle Rattle.

After I changed my receiver to a Titan 2 1/2 in it seemed like a small fortune to change over 6 hitches to 2 1/2 to eliminate the rattle. This time it will be some square tube stock and an hour with the welder and drill press.

I have a Titan 2.5" 20k hitch in my F-350 right now...and it still rattles plenty. I think hitches are just going to rattle.

Agreed. I accept some slop in the hitch/receiver. Too tight and a couple of winter's days creates enough rust that it takes a chain and 4wd to get the hitch back out again. But the sleeve when I first switched to 2.5 in was a second tolerance. And now for those switching from 2" to 3" will have 2 sleeves, each with their own tolerance and enough slop to really be annoying when surfing the rough roads which cause an un-weighting of the trailer tongue. I hate that shock of hitch slop transmitting through the frame.

And as an aside to my above post I recently built a higher mount receiver for my Polaris UTV to elevate the hitch for moving trailers around the shop and yard. Searching through my older 2" hitches for this project I discovered several thousandth's of an inch difference between brands which meant some would not fit my tubing at all and others were moderately loose. I am sure this would contribute to the slop if in service on a vehicle. I guess there is no exact standard for a 2" setup as the size varied according to brand.

I've noticed the same thing - some hitches are tight and some are sloppy. There also seems to be some variation in the actual receivers.

Anyway, I'm actually really happy to have a 3" receiver as this will almost certainly increase weight carrying ability on the hitch.

Take your hitch out when you're not towing?

I'm betting all 250s with the high capacity tow package, along with all 350 SRW diesels and DRW trucks will get em.

This is speculation and not fact though. I tried to keep track of what trucks I saw with them and eventually gave up.

Too lazy, lol. It bangs around when towing, as well.

I think the gas trucks stick with a 2.5", which is actually an upgrade from the 2" they were.

Do you know if ford will produce a ball mount for the three inch hitches like they did for the two-and-a-half inch mounts in years past?

Ford 2.5 inch ball mount: https://accessories.ford.com/catalog/product/view/id/10331/s/kit-trailer-hitch-bar/category/3015/
