Wheel weight ratings

Currently I have 285/70R17's on my 2005 F250. I pull a 38' gooseneck & I noticed that most 17" tires are limited to 3195lb weight rating. Which has me thinking about finding a newer set of factory 20's or 18's since you can get a higher rated tire. Does anyone know what the wheel itself is rated at?

3195 * 2 = 6390 lbs.

How much pin weight are you carrying?

You can get higher rated tires for the 17" wheels, assuming you're looking for a more stable tire and aren't actually exceeding the RGAWR for your F-250.

For example, the Nitto Dura Grappler comes in load indexes of 121, 126, and 128 (3195#, 3750#, and 3970#) for 17" rims. Obviously the tire gets larger as the rating increases, but they're all spec'd to fit on the 7.5" rim. The 128 load index 285/75R17 is actually the highest-rated tire of that model in 17, 18 and 20" rim sizes. The 285/70R17 that matches your current tires gets the 126 load index.

I had 295/70R18 Trail Grapplers with a load index of 129 (4080#) and they were rocks at 80psi, very stable even with the MT tread pattern. The extra capacity wasn't "needed" or even useable since the wheels were only rated to 3525# and the I never went over the even more restrictive RGAWR of the F-250 anyways, but they felt more solid than the original 265/70R17 121LI BFG Rugged Trails.

The gooseneck is putting more weight on the truck than I would like. I think the rear axle had 6200lbs on it with out the camper on the gooseneck. I did not think there was much of a difference between an F350 & F250. The truck has airbags.Currently I have BFG AT's on it.

So you're looking at 6200#'s and adding another 2000 with a camper on top?

You think it'll total over 7k? 8 or 10?

The 95 offroad truck & camper sit on the gooseneck trailer. I can move the offroad truck back on the trailer to reduce the weight some since the trailer is 38' long. I have hauled the combo in the past but never weighed it. I have also hauled the offroad truck & a small jeep before. The offroad truck weighs about 6500lbs. It will be going on a diet when it gets rebuilt.

Just my opinion, but step one is to get everything weighed first. This is too important to guess.
