What's the strangest reason your engine has stalled out/died/grenaded?

Drove home from work one night and as I pulled I to the driveway, the truck hiccupped, backfired and stalled. Next morning shot some ether in it and no start so thought cool not a fuel issue so I pulled the cap and cranked it... Rotor didn't spin..great lost the timing chain. Nope the circled tab in the picture broke off. How does that happen when it doesn't contact anything.

Ahhh....it's a 2002 6 spd cummins with moderate - high (for lack of a better term) power level. Awesome trucks except for the inevitable rocker rust.

I bought mine in 06 with low miles, rust already showing through the rockers. We used to joke how I'd be seats and a drivetrain in no time, replaced the rockers prob in '12 when they were about to let go. I hate rust.
