What Transmission is in my '64 F-100?

Hey guys. I picked up my first Slick yesterday! As with any vehicle I buy, I immediately want to know absolutely everything about it! The previous owner wasnt too much help. He had too many vehicles to keep track of lol. Anyways, I have established that its a 223 ci inline 6. Mostly because (from what I can tell) it was the only 6 cylinder offered in a F100 in '64. The rear end appears to be a 9" (although the gear ratio is still questionable). This leaves the tranny. A search on the internet didnt help much. Its a 3 on the tree. The closest answer I could find is a T85? But its not definitive

The main reason I want to know is to find out what gear ratios this tranny has. 1st gear seems to be incredibly high. I have to slip the crap out of it to get going without killing it. Loading it on the trailer was quite a chore. I killed it twice, and Im a pretty good driver with a clutch.

Thanks for any info guys!

There were 2 inline 6 cylinder engines offered in 64. The 223 and 262. Search 262 on this site to find out how to tell which you have. Your trans is most likely a 3.03. This is the 3 speed version of the famous Ford top loader 4 speed.

You're guessing on the engine, rear axle and transmission, you may be right, or you may be wrong.

1964 could have the 223 I-6 (VIN engine code J) or the 262 I-6 (VIN engine code B).

The rear axle could be a 9 inch, if it doesn't have an inspection cover. If it does have a cover, it could be a Spicer/Dana 44 or 60.2 .. both with Limited Slip.

The 3 speed trans is probably the Ford type 3.03 3 syncromesh.

If the 3 speed has overdrive, it's the optional Warner T-86 (no 1st gear syncro). The optional Warner T-85N with overdrive was installed in 1965/71 F100's.

To verify, post the VIN .. the TRANS & AXLE codes, which are stamped on the 2nd line of the Warranty Plate, riveted to the left door below the latch.

MichiganLarry: The 3.03 3 speed was introduced at the beginning of the 1963 model run (September 1962).

The Ford 4 speed top loader was introduced mid-year 1963 (1963 1/2) along with the Falcon Sprint, 427 & Galaxie 500/500 XL Fastback.

Its definitley a non-OD trans. Its SCREAMING down the highway. Its turning around 2600 rpm at 55. But from what Im told, you cant blow up an inline Ford lol.

And yes, Im guessing about everything pretty much lol. Ill get some info for you guys

I would not rely on what you have been told. Remember this is a 50 year old engine that has been doing a lot of sitting.

I suspect the ratio the fine. I would look first at mechanical problems like dragging brakes, wheel bearings, clutch adjustment, worn clutch or a well oiled clutch disk. Just be be clear a clutch disk should not be "well oiled". Wear or contamination will cause it to slip.
Also it could simply be the new driver unfamiliar with how it drives.

Wow that's awesome! Reps sent to ya!

So it's got a 3.89 rear end. It ought to take off better than it does. I'll have to do some looking. I haven't got a change to give it a once over yet

Truck is a looong way from home, since it was originally sold new in Southern California, the land of fruits and nuts...in more ways than one!

Seeing as it's a 9 inch, someone may have put another pumpkin in it over the years. Maybe a check of the ratio somehow

I think I may have figured out what the issue is. It's one of two things:
#1 the truck wasn't drove much and the clutch needed broke in some. It shifts fine now
#2 I haven't drove a 3 on the tree more than once and Iv got the rythem of it

And of course both could be true. The trans seems to chatter less and take offs are better now that Iv drove the truck all day today

Sometimes the best thing you can do for these trucks is just drive them
