2002 F250 Powerstroke HELP!!!
Since it was late at night my only option was to check the forums and most suggested the pedal was at fault. I tapped several times on the pedal and got it working again. I finished the rest of the 2 hour trip home fine.
Once home I took the pedal off, cleaned with electronic cleaner and compressed air and put it back in. Before this incident I recall having what is described as dead spots in the throttle range. This issue appears to be cleared up now.
What I am experiencing now is when the truck is up to temperature, the idles is loping, and acts like it is missing once in a while. Today while driving it shut off on me once again and restarted immediately. Thinking I may have picked up some bad fuel I filled her up at the truck stop and added some Power Service. Once home, with the truck idling it is not smooth. It seems to stumble and catch itself every so often. I have lost confidence in taking this truck out of town until I can figure this out. I looked in the valley to see if any lines were leaking oil and it is dry as bone. Would the fuel pedal be causing all of these issues? I have seen where some say the injector may be bad, but I am not a diesel mechanic and dread going to the stealership.
Also, I have an Innova 3020 basic scanner, and when I plug it into the OBD port the truck just shuts off.
Your symptoms sound like the CPS or fuel tank but if it is not the steel tank then I highly doubt it.
If you have not done glow plugs on it before then it is a good PM service and you can check out/replace the valve cover gaskets/wiring harness while your at it. I really don't think the glow plugs are the problem but I am just mentioning it as a common failure. Usually you will get a hard start problem and low power and chugging until the engine warms up when the glow plug circuit is at fault.
I would start with the CPS though since this is such a known problem guys often keep a spare one along with a wrench in their glove box.
All the 7.3s common problems were the reason I went with a V10. I have to work on a 7.3 550 at work and even though I am well acquainted with the engine and its nuances, I did not want to deal with them during my free time.
