1982 ford bronco 4.9l with 4 speed manual w/overdrive 4x4 manual lockers
The transmission to crossmember mount on the tranny housing both ears broke off so looking into a replacement tranny but was wondering if a 5 speed is compatible or if I have to stick with the 4 speed. What do you guys recommend?

Sounds like you have an SROD! The mounting tabs on mine were broken off as well. It's pretty common. It's a car transmission that they put bigger bearings into so they could put it into trucks and brag some better mpg during the gas crisis. However, it was way too light of construction to be put into a 4x4. May have been fine on a highway driven 2x4 where it wouldn't be under any stress, but you start using a Bronco how it's supposed to be used, and the casing breaks.
So yes, you can swap in a 5 speed.
I didn't go for a 5 speed with mine, but just about everything I did in my swap would be something you'd have to do in yours. If you went to a 5 speed, you'd be going to a hydraulic clutch (there were no mechanical clutch 5 speeds).
If you don't want to mess with a hydraulic clutch, you can lose the overdrive and put in an NP435 or T18/19.
Either way, be sure to check out my writeup and what you'll have to modify and do. The floor has to change as well as a few other odds and ends. It was a long, tedious swap, but well worth it.

I would surely keep all of your parts if you do a changeover..I'm sure you could find a buyer.

I sure like the way the SROD shifts, and for a mildly used 4x4 that with just an occasional boat launch....I could use that setup, although I'd miss the super low of My NP435, I myself would just have my friend weld that up and have overdrive available. Of course a R/A of 3.50 or lower would probably help.
