Thanks SpikeDog. I can give a longer term review now, to simply report that it works like a charm. It is VERY reactive to exhaust heat, so it fluctuates quickly and sometimes fun to watch if you're bored. It comes in handy for turbo cool down after stopping, rather than just guessing - I usually continue idling until it hits about 350 deg.
Pulling grades, I've seen temps over 1100, and will probably set the 'red light notification' point at 1200, but haven't bothered to do that yet. There can also be an alarm wired in, but I think the light will suffice. The unit keeps the highest temp reached during your trip in its memory, and can be easily recalled. I would recommend this unit based on experience so far.
