Electronic Problems

Hi folks,
yesterday I wanted to drive my 2001 Ford Expedition, but the gear shift does not worked, stayed in the parking-position. The electric window lifter, the cruise control, the rear window heating, the mirror heating, the courtesy light, the runningboards lights and the windscreen wipers in front and back does not work,
This problem I had also one year ago: there was wetness in the plug of the cruise control and because of this the fuse 14 blowed.
But this time no fuse is blowed, every fuse is all right and also all relays.
What can be the reason for this? Exist an automatic controller who switches all these things? And where can I find this controller?
Thanks for your help!

Best wishes
Andreas

Not positive but might be a bad ground, there is a ground bolt behind the panel on the left hand side by the parking brake. Pull the plastic cover off and you will find wiring harnesses behind it. You will also find a ground bolt close to floor level. That is what I would try first. If you cannot find it I can post a picture in the morning. Clean the connections, make sure it is tight.

Hi Expidriver,
thank you for your tip.
I found another ground bolt on half level beside the parking brake. Every connection was ok. Afterwards I removed all plugs, fuses and relays and plugged them back. I do not know what the problem was, but now it works again.
Many thanks for your quick reply.
Best regards
Andreas

Sometimes, relays get 'sticky' when they're not actuated or with age. they operate the same as the twin turbo control solenoids on FD model RX7s, a well-known, well-documented but annoying issue to diagnose. As for the two kick panel grounds, if they do not look FLAWLESS, assume they are bad. Bolts rust, especially on the lower ground point as it is roughly level with the carpet. Mine on the Passenger side was rusted beyond salvaging with a dremel, so I re-routed it to the upper ground point. Stainless steel bolts (M6x1.0 thread, 15mm long is fine), BARE SHINY sheetmetal and dielectric grease are highly recommended to prevent further rust.

The GEM (Generic Electronic Controller), which is on the backside of the interior fuse box is basically the brain for everything that isn't part of the engine. It can be found by feeling up under the dashboard where the fuse box is, just above the two bolt-on connectors. To make a long story short, windshield leaks tend to make the GEM glitch up so items like the Courtesy Lights act up as you have encountered.

When I get sufficient time and a suitable place to do so, I'm planning on getting a GEM and Fuse box for some exploratory surgery.
