What is plug on on a C-6 transmision?
I'm thinking that I'm going to install another oil temperature gauge on my transmission. I read somewhere about this and I understood that there is an outlet on the left side of the casing. I'm looking at the transmission and there is a plug with fines threads tapped in. Would this possibly be a place to install a sending unit? My next question is "would this be the hot side"? or in other words the temperature inside the transmission?
What started all this is when I came across two spare oil temperature gauges in my forgotten goody box of left over treasures from other projects of old. At first I only found one and I immediately thought "I know what I'm doing with that" so I went ahead an installed it. I found out and so it turns out, that I placed it on the steel return line from the trans cooler. Then I'm thinking that's not going to be relative to what I want to know. I started planning to move the sending unit to the send line from the transmission to the cooler then I thought ...( bright light went off inside my head) ...why not install the other gauge in the transmission. If can install it where that plug is that would be awesome. I would be able to monitor the trans cooler and it's effectiveness and also the temperature inside the transmission. Since heat is the worst transmission killer it will be interesting to really get a handle on it. When I get the truck done someday, I might even be able to pull my camper trailer with it. lol
The plug is fine threaded. On removal I noted that it was installed with medium torque, and there was a trace of what I presumed was trans mission fluid.
Temp sender on return.
Here's those gauges...heh heh, yeah I know that they don't match identically, but I thought about that. They are more identifiable from a glance, oh, and another thing they won't know they're on a transmission.

On the left side of the C-6 (when you are sitting in the drivers seat) about 4" directly in front of the shift lever, there is a threaded port that will read very close to what is called front pump temperature. 275F is the maximum temperature recommended because after that, the fluid starts to brown up and smell a little burned.
