Hey folks! It's summer time here in vacationland once again. You know what that means! It's time to lace up your hiking boots and come explore more of Maine's wilderness!

Hop on in guys.I'm starting this summers camping and hiking trip over in Moosehead Junction Township!

What the heck is that you ask?

"A township in Maine is an unorganized (unincorporated) territory roughly the size of a town, but usually with a relatively low population. Populated coastal islands outside municipal borders are also usually included in the list of townships. Most services for townships are handled by the state government."
Maine Townships Genealogy

This township is located in one of Maine's more popular tourist destinations; The Moosehead Lake Region, near Greenville Maine.

On the way there,I stop to grab a pic of this. This isn't something you see just anywhere. Here is a store where you buy furniture in Maine folks.
This is called the "Maine House" and is located in Abbot Maine.I went to their website just now to see if I could find what it was was prior to being a furniture store.Their website just says they bought it in 2002.A motel I suppose?

So here we are.Welcome to Greenville Maine guys.A hot spot for those who come to visit the pine tree state.Huge lake, campgrounds, hiking trails,etc.etc.etc.Right out in the middle of nowhere you'll find campers, boats, kayaks, hikes, fishing, popular swimming holes along with secluded ones and much, much more. It's all happening out here.Come on up and visit!

You guys know me well by now.I prefer seclusion. If I see another car around, that place is no busy for me. I'm headed miles deep in the logging roads for the night!

Many nice hikes in here.

Hey there little guy! It's not a moose but seeing some wildlife is better than none.

Before I pitch a tent,I'll show you guys around in here. It's a bit warm but maybe spot a moose too.The moose up this way are abundant.

They love to hang out to cool off and eat in these swampy places but no luck here!

Oh well,it's pretty country so no lose site seeing that's for sure.
Hey this old gravel pit suits me just fine.

Nothing around but a parked logging truck in off the road and a few black flies.
See you in the morning!

Rise and shine sleepyheads! Who's ready for a hike! Let's hang a right.

Here we are at the Eagle Rock Trailhead guys.A 3.7 one way/7.4 miles round trip hike.

Into the Maine wilderness we go.Already several miles in deep off the main road now.The point of no return! lol.

Moose scat! Keep your eyes open.

Feel the burn! No I ain't talking socialism here,I'm talking leg muscles!

Oh check this out.Welcome to my Sunday church.A meandering forest trail through a stand of white birch is always a surefire way to soothe the soul.

Scenic lookout.You guys game?........I had a feeling.

Lets go up and take a peek.

90F with high humidity today. The high humidity obscures the scene a little like smog but not too bad.Sure is nice up here with the wind. This scenic overlook provides a glimpse of what's to come.

After several strenuous miles, ladies and gents, this seasons first highlight; Eagle Rock Overlook of the Moosehead Lake Region.

I love mother earth! What's not to love? You guys gotta plan a visit up to Maine! Isn't she wonderful!?
It was some windy up there today! Cooled me right down nicely.Take it all in guys.I'll see ya down at the car and take ya downtown Greenville next.

The Indianstore.

"Save moosehead.Say no to industrial wind" I guess nobody wants their landscape littered with wind farms. No one wants filthy air to breathe either though so,take your pick I guess? lol.Anyway, down in the center of town.

Maine black bear ice cream again! Gotta replenish all those burnt calories. Who doesn't like their vanilla ice cream with black bear scat! lol! Oh this stuff is so good. There is no poo in the ice cream guys.Don't worry.

I shouldn't be snapping a pic while driving but I love this weather!I'm definitely in the minority with that. Most Mainers start to complain about the heat at say,oh, 75F lol!

Hope you guys enjoyed the seasons first outdoor adventure.Sit tight cus I've got something new (to share online anyway) this season. This season I was thinking about including a few islands! That should be fun.See you next time here in vacationland! Plan your Maine adventure! What are you waiting for?!

Good morning, stay cool and have a trouble free day Maine.

Awesome hike. We went for a small hike with or cub scout pack yesterday. Was warm but the trail was all in the woods, plus a nice breeze

Welcome back to the beautiful state of Maine guys.Check out what I have in store for you this weekend. This is a nice one.My first time here and I wasn't disappointed. This weekends camping and hiking adventure takes us back up into the heart of the state, into Millinocket. Barack Obama recently proclaimed this monument for us all to enjoy, last August (2016).

It's Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument!

Very primitive still,as it was recently created.I'm taking you in,many, many miles deep into the great Maine woods. The loop road in here is simply old logging roads.I was able to easily navigate my way in and back out, issue free with my Honda Accord.Just pay strict attention to the rocks, with a low clearance vehicle such as this.

What a great place to go,to get away from it all guys.Coming up this summer? Plan a day or two in here guys. You'll have no regrets.

There she is.Mt Katahdin.Maines highest peak. The northern terminus of the Appalachian trail.I've stood on her summit twice in my lifetime thus far.

Only one small, primitive drive up to,campsite at this monument to date.I got the only official tent pad.Cool.I came in late in the day Saturday night too.Another camper or two came in last night too.I love sleeping in a tent. You just can't beat sleeping under the stars on mother earth (with a nice air mattress anyway lol). It just feels so right.

OK guys,so let's find us a nice Sunday hike! This one says Barnard Mountain - 2.3 miles one way.Sounds good to me.Lace up your boots!

More moose scat.Stay alert! I know,I know,I always say this but one of these days we're bound to run into one guys lol.Always best to keep on your toes.

Just a little ways in here, you can sleep in this lean-to if you prefer.I suppose they might have a few of these along the different trails by now.

That my friends is a black bear track. That's his front paw.
Speaking of black bear,I saw one in the middle of the loop road last evening too!I couldn't even think about grabbing my camera.By the time I looked down to get it,the bear did a 180 turn and it was gone back from where it came from. They are such fraidy cats.Look at one funny and he'll turn and run lol.

We'll hang a right here.

Ah here we go. Off old logging roads and up into the woods for the climb up.

Let's head back down guys.....STOP!!! We just spooked a very large bull moose just 50' ahead! Out he comes onto the logging road (blocked off to traffic). I wouldn't have gotten anywhere near this close on purpose.Let's talk to him real nice like.

Yeah. That's it! Nice boy.You go ahead and take your time.I'll just hang back here until your done eating.Don't feel rushed on my account lol.

Woah! Easy there big guy (as I start to walk backwards, very, very, very slowly) It's ok.Your a good boy.How about you don't come this way and I don't come that way and we remain real good friends? lol.

His antlers are just growing back in for the season. They get MASSIVE!
All ended well.He went on to eat as I talked easy to him, then after 5 mins,a few more hikers came along and he run off away from me.

Now back out to the car and the loop road and check this out guys! A cow moose with her calf!

I'll zoom in on the pic and take a snapshot of it for you,so you can see them good.

This was a great weekend getaway guys as you can tell! I hope you enjoyed.
Thank you for the monument,Obama! It's a real treasure! I'll be enjoying this one a lot over the coming years,I can promise you guys this! Awesome!

Still haven't planned your Maine adventure yet? What are you waiting for! Hurry up! Maine summers don't last long guys! Get up here and enjoy our great mother earth, the wildlife and the whole great outdoors!

See you guys next time!

Looks like a gorgeous hole in great weather. All kinds of wildlife. Is the tall pole the monument you are talking about?

I think a tall pole your looking at is by the welcome to the monument sign? That's just a pole for a gate.
The sitting president cannot designate a "National Park" but he can designate a "National Monument".I didn't read anything about this back along but I recall there was some objections and there's still some signs in there claiming the land owner surrounding the right of way in,"says NO!" lol.so perhaps that's why it couldn't become a "park".A lot of today's national parks started off as monuments then latter become parks.I dunno, just government red tape I suppose.

I hope one day the whole area becomes Baxter state and National Parks. That will draw the crowds and I know I would visit Baxter much more if they had a better system setup than the current state park. It's hell trying to get in to climb the mountain. You gotta set up reservations in advance for months. No camping on the trail etc.......Hardly enough parking to even think about being enjoyable.......it could be so much more enjoyable.Something I know without question the NPS could bring to it.Visiting Baxter is like going to a local swimming hole, where there are 100 people when only 50 fit comfortably. It's like they're so afraid to cut open some parking lots in there.I guess they can only manage so many people at a time but man.Only let in half of them at a time then so it's not so crowded.

The past couple weekends I've been camping with my older sister and her 4 kids. Two boys, two girls, ages 8-11.I got to be the greatest uncle ever when I took them fishing for their first time!

Guys,I had the great honor to witness one of natures greatest moments. While fishing,my oldest nephew and I looked up to see two American Bald Eagles performing the stunning display of their mating ritual. No camera but the event was over so quickly I wouldn't of had time to snap a pic anyway I don't think.Just amazing to see in person! We were camping and fishing in Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument where we had the great honor.

For those who don't know;here is a video of the event so you know what it looks like:

I enjoyed this place so much,I had to take some family back.Without me saying anything,my sister stated the same feelings I had.In how that Katahdin Woods and Waters reminded her of our camping adventures as children. What a gift it was to pass these new memories down to her kids.
All the kids caught a fish eventually over the two back to back weekends. My youngest nephew reeled in his first fish here at Katahdin Woods and Waters; a 12" /1lb large mouth bass. You should of seen his eyes!

We also saw the cow moose with her calf again and got more pics.Good times.I've now gone from their best uncle to simply the best uncle ever in the whole wide world, period.
