97 expediton,starting problem

My truck won't start sometimes and after sitting there for 30 minutes or 2 to 3 hrs,it will start again. When I turn the key all the lights are on but it does nothing.I replaced the battery(free) and they tested (advance auto part) the alternator and starter was good.I put it in neutral and it won't start either.Like I said after couple hrs.Should I change battery cables? ty

Does the 'no start' issue happen when the engine is hot, cold, or both?

It happens both ,hot and cold.mostly in the morning or I go store and come back to start (after a few minutes) and won't start. After starting,it will run and start again and again for a while till I need the truck the most and it won't.lol

Is the starter motor original or has it been changed recently?

It is original but I did take it down and took it for test to advance place when the truck wouldn't start at all they said starter was fine, the problem was N-safty cable. That was one one half year ago.

You had the starter tested back then, or now?

Is the issue -
The engine cranks and no start?
OR
No crank?

^^^^ So to restate your issue ...... It is a no crank concern.

When the starter does crank the engine the engine starts well.

Correct?

If correct how many miles on the vehicle?

Working at one moment and not at another is typical of an electrical issue displaying a incomplete or poor connection.

There are few mechanical connections in the starting system.

I would start looking for loose wires or connections then look at mechanical connections.

Items that make mechanical connections are:
Ignition switch
Starter relay
Starter
Neutral start switch
The antitheft system.

There may be others and these are common areas to look.

Come to think of it ,it could be an electrical issue (I was going to mention).Everytime the engine does not start as soon as I turn the key inside the truck starts to play electric drums.

That may come in handy should the radio become inoperative.

Add some guitars and who knows you may have a hit!
