Well after many years of sitting in the Garage, I got the Bronco running just fine. Thanks to all that helped with my questions. Now, when I drive it, the steering seems loose. The front end parts are tight. Even though the steering wheel is on their tight, with the one nut holding it on, the wheel can be moved when the ignition is on a few inches either way before there is any movement of the tires. My question is this. Is there a bushing of some kind that may need replacing between the column and the gear box? Any ideas would be welcomed. Here is a pic as it comes out of the firewall.
someone offers a really nice steering shaft as a replacement to the stock piece. Cant remember the brand, but you can find it at Jeff's Bronco Graveyard on-line. Supposed to be the cats ***. I had an old F-250 that I shoved an old feeler gauge piece in the slip joint to tighten it up. Clamped it in place with a hose clamp. Worked fine, but then again I didn't put a lot of highway high speed miles on it either.
Much appreciated! I love the "Not" Gutless part on your Mustang. My 351 has some Gut's, but with that Bronco rear end, it's not going anywhere fast. Thanks Again!
We have a 1979 Bronco and the steering has always been very tight. It goes exactly where you point it with no slop!
My brother has two big newer broncos. One is an 1988 or 89. He has replaced the steering box for looseness. His last one is from the last year of the big Broncos. I drove it from St Louis, Mo to Pennsylvania after he bought it. It has really loose steering. Driving it was a challenge. My brother said it needed a steering box. So, have someone observe the steering shaft to the power steering box to see if the looseness is in the shaft or the power steering box as the steering wheel is turned with the engine running. That is all I know about it. Patrick
Can you move the steering wheel out of its axis (steering column)? If that's so then the bearing behind the wheel might be shot. Another spot to check is on the bolts (3) that hold the Steering box in place, if those become loose or if they lose the washers the steering will become very loose.
Thanks Patrick!
Yes, I think it might be the shaft. The good thing is, that I have a buddy that is parting out a 1984 F150, so I can just pull the entire gear box and shaft from that truck and give it a whirl. They look identical. Thanks again!
