How to patch puncture hole in steel gas tank ?

suppose a puncture hole were to inadvertently appear in the bottom of
my gas tank? What would be some good ways to plug the hole ?

I'm thinking a fine thread stainless steel flat head screw that was screwed
into a tapped hole with special glue/sealant and a washer would probably
work.

You're probably catching on now..... A non electric drill would probably
be best to drill into the bottom of a full gas tank but all I have presently are battery powered and 100volt drills.

I would drain the tank so no dripping.. sand the tank with rough sandpaper about 3 inches in diameter.. GEt it clean, but plenty of scratches to roughen it up....... Mix up an ounce of JB weld and smear it on the area as a patch. Rub it into the scratches with your finger to get good contact. spread it around with a small putty knife so it is 3 inches in diameter, feathered out thin on the edge and little over 1/8 inch thick over the hole area.

if you cant drain the tank, sometimes you can use a very small sheetmetal screw and get it in half way. smear RTV over the exposed threads and screw it in snug.. wipe off excess RTV..... or you can use a tin roofing screw with the rubber washer ........if that stops the drip, then do the JB weld patch over the top of the screw.

Get something like this.
Amazon.com: Permatex 09101 Fuel Tank Repair Kit: Automotive Amazon.com: Permatex 09101 Fuel Tank Repair Kit: Automotive

That said I would find a better way to drain the tank than drilling a hole in it.

That's the best idea by far!

Now that you have a pretty nice hole drilled there, wouldn't a drain petcock be kind of handy sometimes? "Just thinkin' out loud."

Well I spose. But, if they really want it, they can simply cut the hose too, that's on thousands of trucks just below the in cab tank. See where I'm goin' with that?

Weld it

When "someone" put a hole in my tank, I ended up taking the tank off empty all the gas and let it all evaporate then I flushed the tank with water and welded the hole shut. The hole was the size of a dime. (punch hole).
