I had my 215 rebuilt about a year ago and its been on the stand ever since. I'm starting to dive into all the engine accessories I need to get this beast on the road. Need advice/leads on getting those rounded up for a good price and quality. Going 12 volt.
Starter? My old one may be able to use for a core.
Alternator - planning on GM one wire.
Water pump?
Harmonic damper?
Distributor - planning on a 300 duraspark. Just need to figure out the drive. My new oil pump has the slotted drive where the dist has the hex.
Going with the Clifford dual webers and header kit.
I probably forgot something
I'm sure these answers are on the site its just easier to get them all in one post.
If you need a rebuilt dual sheeve (two belt) truck crank pulley PM me. I had one rebuilt and then figured out it wouldn't fit in my sedan.
When I rebuilt my 215 the water pump for a late 50s 223 was a direct replacement. The truck may or may not be the same. If you have your old water pump get your favorite local auto parts store to order a new pump for a 58 Ford, take your crusty old pump in, and compare.
Can't help you with the alternator, distributor, and dual carbs. I think a 12V starter from a 223 is a bolt on, by I'm not 100% on that.
I just bought the last water pump Green Sales had. Probably your next best bet is to send yours to Egge, or similar, to be rebuilt. I think, but could be wrong, that the truck and car pumps are different - the trucks had pressed on pulleys where I think the cars didn't.
I found some 223 water pumps on rockauto.com. Good prices too. If they will interchange to the earlier 215 and I think they will. They water pump I have on my 215 had a bolt on pulley as does the ones on rockauto.
Just don't know if the starter will interchange. The flange looks different from the pics and the drive may be different as well.
I'd look into rebuilding the starter yourself. At the least don't core the one you have now, if you buy the O'reilly's pos. There are brush/rebuild kits and YT videos and the rest of it, reman starters from the usual suspects oftentimes have a fresh coat of paint and that's about it. Rebuilding a 1st class starter is not difficult. New engine deserves a new starter, bendix, solenoid, cables, etc.
The difference between car and truck water pump installations is the type of fan you use. Trucks originally came with a water pump without a fan and have a separate fan mount cast into the thermostat housing. The separate fan uses a wide belt and the front sheeve in the two sheeve truck crank pulley. It sounds like your motor has the car crank pulley and water pump setup. This thread shows the difference between the two setups: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ater-pump.html
Thanks Fred. On my 215 it looks like someone has put a car water pump on and mounted the fan to it. The upper water neck has the flat mount and two studs for the fan mount and I have the two sheave lower pulley/balancer but the upper fan mount was missing. Always wondered what the flat mount and studs were for. I'm going to use an electric fan anyway so that should free me up on water pump choices.
