4 wheel drive problems 1987 ford f250 6.9diesel

Hello, I currently bought a 1987 ford f250, and i keep fixing and fixing little things on it to make it better. I made my way finally to the 4 wheel drive. I have heard it can be the linkage underneath, but ultimately im looking for some guidance to see what someone else had to do to fix it. It is really hard to get to engage, and when you want it to go back to 2 high it is a struggle.

welcome to FTE.
when the 4X4 shifter gets hard to move, i pull it off, take it apart, clean it up, grease real good, and reassemble.

What TJC said. A lot of times the 4x4 system doesn't get regular use, and the linkage just gets harder and harder to move. Depending on your climate, there can be quite a bit of corrosion after almost 30 years.
