Valvoline PBE 5w-40 Full Synthetic & PB 15W-40 On Sale

Guys and gals, just a heads up, NAPA is having a month long sale on Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme 5W-40 Full Synthetic and Premium Blue 15W-40.

The 5W-40 is $17.99/Gal - normally between $26-28/Gal, and the 15W-40 is $11.69/Gal.

This is arguably the best 5W-40 oil that you can purchase for HEUI injectors and HPOP's and it is cheaper than Rotella T-6 by $2/Gal if you take advantage of this sale. The 15W-40 is better than T-5 IMO.

If you've been straddling the fence on whether to try this oil or a full synthetic, now is the time to jump.

I went to the Napa web site and can't find it. Maybe it's local?

What makes this arguably the best 5W40? Pretty sure the Add packs are about the same, or used to be.
I do know the Cummins crowd swears by the 5W40, and is what is recommended for the Cummins 5.9 in one of our gensets, in fact the tech gets bucky when I threaten to run anything else in it.

Well, you are correct in reference to additive packages....unless some have changed.

So, admittedly it is somewhat subjective. I have run everything from Valvoline, Schaeffer's, Mobile1 TD, Delo, Rotella T-5 & T-6, Royal Purple, Amsoil - all diesel flavors from marine to 5w-40, and some others that I cannot remember right now and I am back to Valvoline and this is where I will stay. Valvoline simply resists shearing better than any other oil that I have run. There are several other 7.3's, 6.0's, and a 6.7 Cummins in a F650( different injector system) in my family and we've all come to the same conclusion....backed up by a more than a few Blackstone reports. All of our trucks get worked hard towing medium to max capacity most of the time. So, the ones with the HPOP's do better with the PBE than anything else we have tried. You can also hear the difference at 5K miles with quieter injectors and faster cold starts. Amsoil was the worst.....

OP, you may check this blog out that I posted in another thread. The guy goes by 540 RAT. Seems to be extremely thorough in his methodology.

Thank you for posting that. It is a very interesting read so far. I will probably have to devote a couple of hours and large mugs of coffee to digest it all.

I did notice that in addition to promoting himself and Oil Extreme, he debunks the whole "shearing" concern and basically states that viscosity does not matter. I wonder to what he attributes the extra noise on HEUI injectors with the lower viscosity oils.

I guess I have never seriously considered nor have I ever tried Amsoil's 3000 series oil due to cost: $12.10/qt x 15=$181.50 not including filters and no extended oil change interval = holy shiitake mushroom x 20 ... Some months I would be spending close to $500/month on oil alone. Sticker Shock..

I wish that the Premium Blue Extreme had been included as well as Shaeffers.

I do use the Valvoline red bottle 5w-30 in my gasser....now I feel better about that decision.

Thanks for the link. Just picked up enough for two oil changes since I had two filters on hand.

You're welcome. Someone else mentioned the Shaeffers too. I admit, I'm not familiar with it. What I found VERY interesting was some of the conventionals doing better that a lot of the synthetics.

There are several sections to his blog and he has one devoted just to viscosity and shearing I believe. There are others that are interesting as well like the thermal breakdown section.

He is available to answer question on his Q & A section. If you have something you want to ask.

I will continue to use Chevron Delo conventional as it seems to be the best one that is readily available for the money.

I have a theory....

We're going to see more sales. A new specification of HDEO oils, of which the one for our trucks sounds too good to be true, will be out later this year.

All of these current oils will not be as good as the new spec oils will be. And we'll all have shelves full of Mobil 1, Delo, Valvoline, whatever is next, synthetic and conventional.... And be wanting to switch to the new stuff...

It's my theory, and I'm sticking with it...

Fortunately I have plenty of things that don't have $13K motors in them to run the "old" oil through...
