questions about 51 pickup

i was out with my truck and a guy wanted to talk trucks. he said he has a '51, 6 cyl, 4speed on the floor that has an 8' box. he said it was an f1. i said sure it's not an f2? he said, no, it's an f1. was there a '51, 4 speed/floor with an 8' box? i'm sure our knowledgeable folks can answer that from memory, thanks, dick r.

Sometimes people can not really remember what they have. This astonishes me personally but....

The guy you talked to probably has a 57 chevy or something....

Many things happen

The original owner was born in the '30s or earlier. In the life of that truck, parts were available, not available, and available again through reproductions. Parts were sourced through the dealership, the salvage yard, and the current catalogs. I always check the running gear for info. Many restorations were downgraded in capacity due to availability of parts. I've seen a few 3/4 tons that ran 9" rear ends and the F150 disc conversion because that was available at the time.

Cabs were replaced, axles were changed. When you buy an historic relic from the past, you inherit the ideas and whims of the previous owners. At this point, I would check the frame for the manufacturing number (Vins didn't exist yet) and look at the equipped hardware.

If the rims are 5 bolt with 1/2" studs, it's a F1. 8 bolt means an F2 or F3. The bigger trucks used different bolt patterns, but were beefy enough that there was no confusion of being an F1.

Many people have swapped beds or cabs and even drive train from other trucks trying to make an F1 over the last 20 years since they are the most in demand.
