Ok I am glad I'm getting your opinions. From what I've read and you guys have said I'm leaning heavy on the y block rebuild . What was the base horsepower in that y block? I know I can add some performance to this motor . I'm not looking to race it either I guess 300 ho was overboard .
It's not all that hard to build a performance y-block.
When I was young my oldest brother was running a 292 Y-block in a 1956 F100. It made pretty good power. Had good crisp throttle response. About all I remember is it had 11.5:1 CR, fairly aggressive custom grind cam, Holley 650 DP carb and ram horn exhaust manifolds. He managed to put a 4 speed Ford Toploader trans behind it.
If your goal is 300 HP I'd stick with the Y-block. I think your truck will be much more valuable as well.
I'll add my voice to the others in favor of keeping the Y-block. A set of Reds headers, Holley 390cfm 4 barrel carb with an electric choke, Pertronix Ignitor and coil (eliminates the hassle of "fiddly" points and condenser) and an Edelbrock or Offy intake will go a long way toward making that Y-bloke run much better and for a lot less than a used 302 engine and adapter kit. Also much simpler modifications than an engine swap.

It is also way cooler IMHO
Agreed. You see a lot of SBC or even SBF swaps, but there are not nearly enough Y-blocks out there. And as already pointed out, everything will bolt back into your truck, no major mods needed to the drivetrain, etc..
Yea we decided that the y block rebuild will be the easiest way to go and keeping it original with a sort of different motor than most would like is a cool idea. So today the motor came out and the trans is off. Tomorrow ill take off the bellhousing and flywheel and get it on an engine stand. Anyone ever taken off the bellhousing and flywheel? any tips or tricks i should know of?
