E-250 Rear end noise only when turning

Hello All!

My van's particulars:

2011 E-250 w/4.6 L V8

65000 miles

My problem: there is an intermittent scraping noise coming from the rear wheel/axle/diff. area. this ONLY occurs when I am coasting or braking while turning right.

I does not happen when turning left, or accelerating or above ~30mph (at least I can't hear it over the normal rattle and hum)

Any advice help is greatly appreciated!

Thanx in advance!

-Tony

Scraping noise...almost sounds brake related. Have you taken a look at the rear brakes?

Is this a limited slip axle?
Sit in the back and have someone drive in circles in a parking lot. I had a Positrac lock up the clutches when a dealer forgot the friction additive. Caused the outside tire to drag/skip on tight turns. It leaves a faint skid mark.

Does the axle have oil?

Busted caliper pins would be my vote.

when I first had my mechanic try to fix it he replaced the caliper on the RR wheel

How do I tell if it is a limited slip differential?

On the door post sticker it has 22 under axle if that means anything.

some others have suggested the axle bearing, carrier bearing and excessive axle lateral play on the axle.

the friction reducer has also been suggested by several people.

Thx again all!

Also might check the front caliper pins. Sometimes sound origin can be deceiving. If you grab the caliper and lift up / pull down you might find one or more broken caliper pins that way.

With that low of mileage, seems unlikely that you've got a rear wheel bearing or rear end issue. Not impossible, but just not the first thing that comes to mind. Rear wheel bearings usually are a low rumble sound and wouldn't be linked to whether you are coasting or on the brakes.
