I was hoping to hear that!! Good Saturday I plan on figuring out steering and what the hell the wire is coming out of gear box that appears to have been tied to the side of the frame to get it out-of-the-way somewhere around 1950
Hey RMP,
Steering is likely to be a more complicated to fix. The stock steering box & column is all (1) piece. Not hugely
adjustable. Most guys have gone to a Toyota steering box & some form of power steering to bring the steering up to a more modern feel (ie safe).
How are your brakes? We opted for a 2 chamber master cylinder so all brakes don't go out at once among other upgrades....
It's a slippery slope once you start updating various systems. Small bite size projects are best - keep it running. Try to fight tearing
it all into a pile of parts - its much harder to put it all back together.
Brakes are all new one chamber though, but every thing was replaced stock. King pins are new Vaughn and I replaced the hole front end suspension every part. I was considering just open it and check the gears for ware. I see one Mac plenty of internal parts available
Clean and repack with grease and new rubbers and then read the adjustment procedure not much there. I was thinking of getting new springs in side of it

If you've replaced all wear items in the front end, have the front end in alignment, have decent tires, have caster wedges installed, it is probably time to look at the steering box. These boxes are about as simple as a gearbox can be and these old trucks steer pretty darn well when all is right. It is not normal for these truck to wander all over the road.
These gearboxes are not hard to work on or adjust. There have been a couple threads here where folks rebuilt them. I believe parts are still available.
A successful rebuild requires disassembly and all parts evaluated. Any worn part must be replaced and adjustments must be made in order as first adjustments are critical to secondary adjustment.
If we were closer and you could carry the steering box to me I would adjust it for you in about an hour.
