As I was setting up my fel pro 1250s3 intake gasket I noticed the lack of gasket coverage on the outer water passages. I measured end to end and came up with 18 1/8". I measured the gasket at the outer edge of the water port and came up with 18". 1/16th" coverage on each port. And that's if you center it perfectly. I'm surprised they would list this for an early 302. Fel pro 90103-1 will work but it has a open crossover port. I'd like to use a metal laminate gasket without the crossover port.
What are you 289/302 guys using?
It's been a while since I did the 347 stroker in my mustang but I know I ended up with a thicker gasket because of sealing issues. I have an opened FelPro 1262 R package which is probably the one I used. I have an unopened TrickFlow2855 for what ever reason. But in any case I vaguely remember the same issue. I'm pretty sure I trimmed the gasket opening to match the heads/intake as best I could (Trick Flow Street Heat Intake - EFI). When I recently did the 351 I have in the pickup I did the same thing but was not as **** about it. So not perfect but a little trimming I believe (hope) will help with not preventing any coolant or airflow restrictions that it would of had if left as is.
In the past I used Fel Pro performance intake gaskets on a 351W. I found on a street car over time the material would wick coolant and eventually start to leak. Fel Pro support told me the performance gaskets are not intended for long term use. But designed for engines that will be disassemble frequently. I switched to Edelbrocks intake gaskets. They look identical to Fel Pro's 1250 but are made of a different material for long term street use. They also come with a heat crossover block off. I always end up trimming the gasket to fit the coolant passage whether it's a Fel Pro or Edelbrock gasket.
Thanks for the replies. My problem is a little different. I'm looking for more gasket coverage at the water ports. I might just get the 90103-1 and make a block off for the exhaust crossover. I'll checkout the edelbrock. if they are steel core I'll get them. If not they'll likely burn through the crossover over time.
