One wire conversion: What alternator did you use?

Im buying the American autowire rewire kit. It does away with the factory external voltage regulator, and requires a single wire/internally-regulator alternator, GM style.

Anyone else do this? Which alternator did you use, and how did the conversion go for you?

Thanks

Thanks, silver.

the AAW kit requires the GM style connector I believe. Is it interchangeable?

The 3g's can be wired down to one wire, basically. It's a pretty common swap. Summit racing also sells 1 wires in all flavors, including factory Ford replacements. 1 wires have their fans and their detractors, it mostly goes along with the hei fans and detractors. Simplicity of wiring vs paying a little more or using a non Ford part for no reason other than simplicity of wiring.

Myself, I like my wiring simple.

This is true in my case. When I tried the 3G mod, the alternator was too strong for the single belt driving it and I found myself shredding belts. It was cheaper and easier going the 1 wire alternator route than trying to round up the parts needed for a dual pulley set-up. I ended up buying a 100A Powermaster unit from Summit. It mounted the same as the Ford units and I have no belt squealing.

I used 3g alternator out of a 94 mercury cougar. While I was at it, I also grabbed the under hood fuse box because it has a slot and cover for the 180 amp mega fuse built into it. It worked great with the AAW harness which is what I'm running as well.

On my truck I have a 140 amp from summit racing. On my mustang I have one from an 84 camaro Z28. 94 amp I believe. Both aren't very bad on the wallet but the Z28 alternator is found at any parts store with a lifetime warranty. Both alternators have worked wonders for me. My truck has a pretty demanding amp for my music. Lights would always dim and at times the stereo would reset. Slapped that 140 amp and upgraded some wiring, all issues solved. With my mustang I originally tried a 63 amp reman from oreilly, part number 01-0039M I think. Went through 3 of them in 2 years. Internal regulator always went bad. Went to the 94 amp outta the Z28 from Advance Auto and wow what a difference. Signals flashed faster, lights were brighter, and most importantly it has not gone bad! Also want to add on the 63 amp I always had to drill out the mounting hole for the bolt to fit. The 94 amp I didn't have to do any drilling. Hole was the exact size for the bolt.
