Interior Noise - Diesel vs Gas

Hi All,

New to the forum, but not to Ford trucks. I currently own a 15 F150 platinum, and have my eye on a 17 F250 Platinum.

Neglecting all the other pros/cons, how do you feel the 17 Diesel will compare to Gas when focusing on interior cruising road noise?

Cruising noise is important to me as I will often be transporting two small children. I've never owned a Diesel so any input would be appreciated!

Thanks!

I recently test drove a 15 f350 diesel and a gas f350 and there was not much of a noticeable difference

Thanks! That was my initial thought, that with all the new tech/sound proofing there wouldn't be much of a noticeable difference, especially in the 17's.

Welcome to the forum.
I own a few 2016 gas f350s.
My buddies diesel 2015 f350 is not much noisier on the hwy.
Once up to cruise speeds your biggest sources of noise are tires and wind noise, so engine noise probably is not going to cause you an issue is my 2 cents on the topic.
Cheers

The one thing I hear from every customer on the diesel is "it's so quiet". Granted that'd compared to an older diesel (or older gas even). Side by side the diesel is louder and does sound like a diesel. That being said, on a long trip with children you'll have to hear them fight the whole way on these trucks.

You have children and you are worried about the noise of the diesel?

I have 3 kids (7, 10, 12), and the diesel noise is the least of my noise concerns.

Seriously, though, you won't notice much, if any, difference. If you hit the hills while towing, the diesel will likely be quieter as it will run a lower RPM to maintain speed.

Thank you all for the help! This forum is way better than the F150's. I would have had 25 replies full of nonsense.

I currently drive a 7.3 2001 psd and it is loud. At highway speeds with the windows up it is not too bad, but I always know it is a diesel. I took a loaded truck and heavy boat to California (2700 mi) with a friends 6.7 (2012) and I didn't want to stop at the coast. It is so quiet compared to the 7.3. Another friend has a 2015 6.7 and it is even quieter yet with substantially more power. Don't hesitate to go diesel because of sound. There may be a difference compared to gasoline but it cannot be much. Please enjoy your new truck!

If you stop and listen to a 6.7L superduty while it's idling you'll notice that it's so quiet and when it's going down the road it sounds nothing like it's predecessors.

I have had people riding in my truck swear my diesel truck was a gasser... At times I can get away with ordering in a drive thru with the 6.7 without having to turn off the motor (or being asked).

To me it's a different kind of sound too. The gas motor revs more - especially when towing - whereas the diesel doesn't. Make sure if you test drive both, you test drive the same trim level too.

When I jump into a gas vehicle I have to retune my internal rev limiter as I think the motor is revving too much, when it isn't.

Just was the passenger while towing a 13500 pound 34' wellcraft (quad axle trailer probably added another 3-4000 pounds). Could barely hear the 6.7 while towing through the north georgia mountains. All of the newer diesels save for the Dodge are pretty quiet in the cabin. This one will be even quieter than the 2015 I was in.

You have kids and are worried about engine noise? I could have a jet turbine in my truck and I would not ever hear it.

When I first looked at the 2011 I had told the salesman (after he started it with the remote), "You know i asked for a diesel". He said, "It is."

Daaaaaan,

After owning a 6.7.....most users WANT it to be louder. It is by far the quietest Ford Pickup diesel ever. Almost doesn't feel right. It's like a hybrid Porsche peeling out....just doesn't do it for the soul like a turbo 911 does. Your kids won't even know it's there. I will say though....it is NICE not having to turn the truck off at the Taco Cabana like I did with the 7.3 and 6.0. Good luck in your choice
