Help with a 390 in a 1949f1

I have searched for two days trying to find this answer. I am going to put a 390 with a front sump oil pan with a c6 trans from my 69 f250 in my 49f1. I have found threads saying I need a rear sump oil pan but they all where using a mustang front suspension and I am using my stock suspension. Do I need to try and find one and a pick up tube before I start. It looks to me that I may have room with out one but I wanted to find out before I start

I think the oil pan will be the least of your worries. The 390 is a large engine to put in a small hole. You'll have more troubles with firewall, floor, crossmember and exhaust fitment than oil pan. Think and plan carefully. You'll have to set the engine/trans in place and see for yourself what mods will be needed to make it work.

Do an Advanced Search on here (or just google it) for "Julies Cool F-1". He had a 390 in a '51, same difference. Lots of trouble with clearing the steering box with headers, he ended up offsetting it as I recall. Some very detailed discussions and photos.

thanks, I did the advance search and look at tons of photos and saved them for future info. it seems having a stock front end and Toyota power steering box is going to help me out. speedway has a mount that seems to work. it also looks like Julie has been banned from what I read. I have more research to do

The 390 is a big motor, for that small space. Like has been said, plan and don't make anything permanent until you have tried all the possibilities. Headers and Toyota power steering will make you scratch your head. If you looked at Julie's stuff you will get some insite.

A 390 is no bigger than a 337 flathead used 48 thru 1951. What you need is
exhaust manifolds from a 330 or 391 FT- HD that dump in the middle (away from
steering box). I don't think the crankcase will be a problem although 391FT has
a flat crankcase. sam

The 330's very common on school buses uhaul trucks. 391Fts common on F7 F800
a lot of cab overs. Also the 360 361's later on. They all look the same but are
different inside. The signs of FT's are a governor duel thermostats manifolds dump
in the middle the usual 4bbl Holley fatter crank. This pic is a 391FT in a 1953 F900
notice the big duel thermostat housing..

Thanks big job. I have been searching this and I have found they will work if you weld or block off the cross over ports. I need to get it out of my 69 and clean it up so I can start to fab it up in the 49 to see where I am at. I got to get the garden out for my mom first then hit it hard. Yesterday I made a plate to cover the steering hole up so I can make a hole for the column that's on the way.

also, if the room is too tight for exhaust I may sell my Toyota setup that was never used and go with the axle mounted rack and pinion set up at performance online

I'm putting a 352 same FE block ans the 390 in my 1950 F-1. I haven't run into many problems "YET" But then I'm going to the dark side. Stock front end. Fiberglass tilt front end. Drop axle. Yes there isn't much extra room. I'm going with headers and electric fan

sounds pretty much the same swap. I didn't drop the axle but I also have a old style tilt front end I plan on using. Wish we lived closer we could help each other. What motor mount did you use and what headers ?

I just started my build last Sept so I haven't done a lot yet. I did the drop front end to match the lower rear end. I went with an explorer 8.8 with the springs under the axle. The few of the things I've had problems with "so far" have been answered here great site. I'm glad your putting Ford engine back in it.

Yesterday I started the donor truck and power washed the engine. It wasn't too dirty because I try to keep stuff clean and since it was rebuilt a few years ago it don't leak oil. I am also using the factory bucket seats. They had new covers put on about 10 years ago and they are still in good shape. I am also using the brake set up and wiring harness.
