Expedition 2007 (5W-20 or ??? after 270,000 km)

All,

Some of garages here in KSA are asking me to change the oil grade as your car engine is getting old now (as mileage upto 270k). Currently I am using 5W-20 as mentioned on oil cap.

Some technical suggestions please?

Congratulations on getting so many miles on your car.

What oil grade are they recommending?
Is your engine using very much oil between oil changes?

You could use 5W-30 for sure.

There's no "right" answer here really. Arguments can be made for both sticking with the 5W-20 and using 5W-30 due to the vehicle's age. For what it's worth (and anecdotes are worth little), I used 5W-20 in my 5.0 V8 Mountaineer up to when I sold it with 234K on the clock; the engine was still running perfectly.

hi Rechard,
Thanks! It's not taking extra oil while changing every time. Only the pick is little bit low than earlier. May be some other issue?

mbkabbasi,

Most important is clean oil.
Use a high quality oil filter. The Mobile One filter is very good as is the Purolator Pure One. There are some other good ones but I can't verify which ones.
In my opinion Fram oil filters are one of the worst on the market.

I hope I did not hurt anybody's feelings by saying this.

Being that you are in KSA I would say 5W30. 5W20 is also good but with ambient temps well into the 100s in the summer I would say go with 5W30. I would also stay keep up with oil changes (which if you got 270K out of a 5.4 motor you are doing quite well), as you know dust storms are starting up and the debris makes it way into engines no matter how well sealed.
