Let's face it. At at least one point in our driving lives, each one of us has...er...gone a little faster than we should've been going.

This is devastating news.

It took me years to refine a keen enough eye to distinguish ski racks from LEO light bars. It didn't help that someone came up with the clever idea of making red and blue pads for ski racks, but I even overcame that hurdle.

It took me years to learn the headlight and grille signatures of Plymouth Satellites and Gran Fury's, Dodge Diplomats and St Regis, Chevy Impalas, Ford LTDs and Crown Victorias. Ah, I'm going to miss the P71 Crown Victoria... 20 years of the same police vehicle platform made rearview mirror spotting day or night very easy.

By comparison, these new Explorers are impossible at night. The headlights and tail lights when illuminated bear no resemblance to what they look like during the day. It will take me years to learn the difference.

And now, with these new built in take down lights tucked under the roof line? I might as well turn in my license now. My past 35+ year clean record streak of ticket free driving is about to end.

The giant LED spotlights will give it away during the daytime, as well as being a blacked out Ford Explorer which always gets my attention. Even then it is getting harder to spot police cars any more. There are too many Dodge Chargers and Chevy Tahoes around where I live, as well as the new Chevy Caprice which looks like a Malibu at a glance.

The most surprising police cars I've seen were the minivans in Washington State. This was in the '80s. They weren't evidence collecting vans either. They were on the side of the highway pulling people over. I think they were Aerostars.

I once saw an unmarked dark green F-150 pulling someone over about 8 years ago. That was a shock. A fully uniformed highway patrol officer got out, and it wasn't Halloween, so I assume it was legit. And yes, I've seen those Chargers on the highways of Texas and Oregon.

I'm glad I realize that speeding costs more in fuel, which costs more time out of my life to pay for, which ultimately slows me down further. I still like to keep a look out though, no matter how slow I go.

The State Police around where I live have two F-150's, although they are marked.
