Kalifornia Smog Test

Well, I got my DMV renewal today and still no notice of having to have a smog test done. I bought my truck in May of 2010 and it is a job 1 truck. I figured now that it is "5" years old that I would be required to have a smog test done. Nope, not yet. Have any of you Guys in Kalifornia had to have a smog test done? Thanks.

Rick

I thought it was 5 years old and then every other year, meaning that you may get 6 years depending on the luck of the draw. I definitely had to get smogs tests on my '99 7.3l, it is kind of a joke since they can't really do anything except look at it and plug into the OBD port and see if you've monkeyed with it. They don't put it on the dyno or stick anything up the pipe.

Yep

Smog check was done in 2014. Truck is a 2012. There is no grace period of five years on a diesel.

Where is your truck registered. I could be your location.

This seems to imply no smog for the first 6 years...

Better info

This is from the link provide above.

NOTE: Upon initial registration, nonresident,
  • Diesel powered vehicles 1998 model year and newer with a Gross Vehicle Weight rating (GVWR) of no more than 14,000 lbs, and specially constructed vehicles 1976 and newer require smog certification. The six or less model years old rule does not apply to these vehicles

I didn't have to have my 2005 smogged until the 4th year.

The key there is "Upon initial registration, nonresident,

Read in it's entirety, this statement applies. "Owners of vehicles six or less model years old will pay an annual smog abatement fee for the first six registration years instead of being required to provide a biennial smog certification." Note that the first registration is when you buy the truck & drive it off the dealers lot. That means you have five years (registrations) with no smog test/certificate required.

Hmmm. That doesn't seem right. Wonder if they changed the law recently. I have friends with newer trucks & cars that aren't getting a smog notice.

Is he the original owner? Did the truck come from out of state?
