The small shaft goes thru the small gears. The 5/16 bolt keeps the shaft from falling out. Do you have the rear tires off the ground ? Wiggle the drive shaft or ring gear to show that nothing is in a bind on the small gears. You should be able to push the shaft out one way or the other. Tap on the shaft and see if it will go in 1/4 inch. Rotate the driveshaft around so the extended pin is sticking out toward you and grab it with plier if needed.

Okay got that out but my gears fell out too. So I have the bearing and seal in along with the axle, now I have to install the gears back in place. I have a large washer I'm not sure where it goes, I'm thinking on back of large gear that the axle passes through. Need help installing these gears

Sorry to hear about the troubles here.

May I suggest you bite the financial bullet and have this towed to a shop that specializes in axle repair? Gears falling out, and the way you describe the bearing failure suggest you may need a new housing and serious work in the actual differential area.

And to further pile on, how long did you drive this thing with smoke coming out of it? You really can't ignore grinding noises, and a bearing failure with smoke is a kiss away from a fire.

Good luck with it, but the answer is not in simply putting the gears back in there.

Let me back up for a second. The gears that fell out --was that just the side gear for that axle?

This is a video about replacing the spiders. You may be able to inspect those gears and reinstall.

Where the bearing failed, was the housing damaged?

Yes housing was damaged, I installed new bearing anyway and pushed axle in now cant get it back out. I could only push axle in through new bearing so far then had to bang it. When I did this the axle won't turn. I did get the spider gears back in place. I did damage driving on axle coming home I know because when I went to pull out axle the bearing and seal just came out with it then I had to cut it off axle. This is just crazy but seems I destroyed the axle

I am pretty sure the bearing needs to be pressed, not hammered, on to the axle. Did the old bearing spin in the housing? If so, you may need a new one.
