Gave up on 351W and bought a 475 ci

Could not find a 96 351 w but came upon a fantastic 475 out of a 79 Fire Truck.
Runs great, needs carb work, but dang what a big block it is. Of course it will take heavy springs up front but other than a transmission adapter, what else do you fellas see. Motor mounts will change and I know all about the emissions but in less than four years it is a classic and my county doesn't do emissions anyway.

Assume the truck has an E4OD?

If so how do you plan to supply electronic control for it?

Just saying, but I'd honestly really avoid that engine.

  • They're huge and extremely heavy. They have much metal than a 460. You're looking at the weight and size of a 7.3 Powerstroke (~1000 pounds). They might even be physically larger than a 7.3
  • Parts are very difficult to find them
  • Fuel economy is absolutely atrocious
  • They're dogs. That 475 is a detuned 477 which was already lucky to make 260 HP
  • Performance parts are absolutely non-existent
  • It's not a good engine for a pickup
If you want a big block, put a 460 in it, or just put a 351 back in it. As long as you still have your original 351, you can swap any 351 you want into that truck. You just need to use the '96 electronics and put the '96 front cover and crank sensor on it.

+1 lack of aftermarket support is a huge killer. Would be much easier to build a 460

I thank you all for the reports and I am still searching for a 96' 351W. I could not pass up that huge engine. And I may look forward to installing it in a 80' F250 that I have.
I would prefer to keep the 96' close to stockish. You guys are great.

Why are you so hell bent on finding a '96 351W? Nothing really special about them other than having a roller cam and the mis-fire detector sensor and tone ring on the balancer.

So all he needs is a 94-up & change out the balancer, right? Couple of sensors are 96 specific aren't they?

Honestly I kid because I care...

Any 351W would work. The best bang for the buck is a ~1994 and up roller 351W. The only specific sensor is the mis-fire/harmonic balancer and the EGR feedback (DPFE) with the companion EGR tube. Assuming the OP has a 351W already and looking for a long block they could swap those items onto the donor.

My 96 XLT 4x4 is a 302 engine, and it is tired (218,000). The truck is perfect with no dents, rust or missing parts. I can replace the 302 with a factory rebuild reasonably cheap but I wind up with a low torque 302. I think and have been told the 351 has better torque and HP to pull my RV. This is the basis for my wish to upgrade to the 351. The 475 was a impulse buy and I have another truck that I can use it in, and I got it very reasonably.

Thanks for the input. Keep it coming.

But we're telling you, you don't need a 96 351.

Yes you are telling me this but there are additional items needed for the computer hook up. I was hoping for the 96 swap but if I need to go to 94 or something else, then that is what I will need to do.
