How do you check the lifters and rollers?

Quick question, how do you check to see if your lifters and/or rollers are bad?

I checked my rollers, they all roll smoothly.

I checked some of my lifters, they all were hard in the engine but when you turn them upside down and start pumping the oil out of them the piston inside moves up and down.

How do I know if any of these things are bad?

Sounds like you have them OUT already. I just completed a timing job including replacing all my lash adjusters and roller / followers - and still, I must say I am not sure I can tell you how to reliably tell if one is OK for continued service.

Seems as long as there is NO play at all in the rollers, and they roll smooth, and they are not pitted on the roller surface - they should be OK.

As for lifters, I did have to use 'vice grips' to twist about four on Cyl 3 & 4 out. As you say, they were hard to depress until you got the oil out of them, but then they would push in and spring back. A few felt a little scratchy when moving the plunger. But I just replaced all 24 of both - and the engine is unbelievably quiet. All you can hear is the muffled sound of the injectors now.

BTW. I did not use the spring compressor. I just placed all the new lifters / followers in place and -VERY GENTLY placed the CAM on them and tightened all the cam journal bolts about 2 turns each over and over until they were all tightened down, then torqued them in proper sequence. Worked perfectly for me.
