Rewire kit advice

Hello, new member here. Got a 68 2wd farm truck i'm working on getting daily driver spec. The one thing that is making progress difficult is the decrepit wiring. This truck spent most of its life on a cotton farm and im pretty sure it had a service bed on it for a while. I'm fighting rusty plugs and broken conections under the insulation. I have to nudge the fuse block with my boot to keep the blower motor running and the tag light wiring is dead. A rewire kit made for this truck is way out of the budget however iv found a universal 21 circuit kit sold by many different companies under a few different names.

Speedmaster PCE368.1002, Speedmaster Universal Wiring Harness Kit | Speedmaster

jeggs has one listed on there site that looks identical as well as a bunch of other hotrod suppliers at various prices. Anybody have an experience with a kit like this? All the threads iv read so far that a rewire has been done, they used an expensive kit, or are swapping in a fuel injected motor.

any wisdom is appreciated!

"Universal" means it'll require modification to install on your truck.

Go with Centech... designed specifically for Ford trucks of our vintage.

It's been my experience with "universal" parts that it just means it universally doesn't fit anything. In the end, purpose-built stuff will be well worth the higher price paid for it.

Gonna go a wee bit against the grain here. I used a 12 circuit EZ wire harness to rewire my rig and it worked great. 21 circuits will be too many unless you plan on running a lot of accessories.

i do plan on adding a larger stereo, electric fan, and perhaps an electric fuel pump. i also found pigtails for most of the interior switches. how was the install? did the kit come with enough wire?

I agree with Dewd. I rewired two of my Fords with 18-circuit Painless kits and never had a bit of trouble. The key is to go slowly, one circuit at a time, checking each before you go on.

The harness has provisions for a stereo and an electric fan. You may need to fab a wiring setup for you fuel pump.

The install was pretty good. I went VERY slow and it took me about a month once I really got rolling. I knew nothing about wiring a vehicle. If you know somebody who knows what they're doing or if you have some experience, it'll take you a few days, maybe even just a weekend. The way I wired my truck, the wires were a little short going to the tail lights, but it was was really easy to just add some wire.

Hmm sounds like you'll also need to do the 130amp 3g later alternator swap since you want to add goodies that take power needs,

I agree with orich, the alternator upgrade is needed first.

already got one on the shelf that was supposed to be for my maverick. i suppose a semi-hidden standalone system for the fuel pump would be a good anti theft device. Thanks gents!

Had to do the same... the clips corrode and break.... for a quick fix until you're ready, this is an option.
