Was wondering since warm weather is back on its way: and I own a 1985 ford f150 4x4 , presently using the cliffords intake webber two barrel and original fuel pump just curious to what everyone is using as a fuel pump(electric)When it get hot and I use the ac a lot , seem I get a vapor lock after a log drive and cutting the truck off to fuel etc . Takes a while to foot feed gas to get it cranked . This doesn't happen in cool/ mild weather , mainly ac on its hot or just plain warm after a good drive .If I cut it off and restart it quick its ok ,its only being off like 10-15 mins , Thanks TR
OK I take it this is a 300-6 with the Clifford intake & Weber carb am I right?
Being it is a carb I cant see it being a vapor lock. VL is when fuel cant get to the carb. The carb having a fuel bowl should still have fuel in it if you just shut it off so it should start back up and run till the bowl is empty.
What I think is happing is the carb is getting too hot and boiling the fuel out of the bowl and maybe into the motor causing it to flood. To check next time this happens remove the air filter and see if fuel squirts when you move the linkage. If no fuel squirt then that is what is happing.
Now you can still get fuel to squirt but the fuel still boiled over and flooded the motor. Have you checked the float level and if ok try to lower it a bit to see if that has a change.
I also hear the Weber carbs don't like higher fuel pressers and need to run a regulator to get the fuel PSI below 5 psi. I have also heard of others having this same issue even with different carbs & v8's and adding a regulator to lower the fuel psi fixed a hot start issue.
If you do want to run an elect fuel pump just know they do not pull fuel too good and because of that should be mounted below fuel level, kept wet all the time and close to the tank. Because the fuel pick up is at the top of the tank it is hard to be below fuel level and kept wet all the time.
The pump should also be wired up so when the motor is not running the pump does not run. This could be done thru a oil psi switch made for this. Thing is it will only power the pump when you have oil psi so after cranking a few sec. and running. Guess you could add a bypass switch to turn on to fill the carb float bowl then turn it off and let the oil psi switch do it's thing.
I do appreciate the replies , yes Harte is does have the water cooled feature and it is hooked up. And Dave , I do use a regulator set at 3psi. I did many searches and found older vehicles that actually vapor lock (same situation)Here in South Carolina we have some hot humid summers , temps reaching 108-110 heat factors and some days maybe higher. When I did my set up fuel bowl, it was set at 17mm( weber specs).Dave I will try to see if it squirts or it has boiled out . Maybe flooding is an issue ( I remember them days) ,I actually have pushed it to floor to get it cranked .Carter has a fuel/fuel filter set up (electric pump) you can use in line with your slave pump. But also, Cliffords sells the redline pump (listed on there sight) where it was not listed when I did all the swaps (2013).With fuel injection on all my other vehicles sometimes I will forget to prime (foot feed).Harte / Dave thanks I think you hit the nail on this one .Guy who had a corvette(1965)had these same issues where an electric fuel pump solved his issues . I do not want to throw $$ at it if its a simple fix. It actually cranks , just takes longer and only when Hot!!!! Many Thanks TR Yes when we hard the word fuel injection years ago we said whaaaaaaaaaat?
I also had a boat ( 1985 galaxy ) same issue , carbed , when u switch off it would not start, , had to feed it gas to restart, Mercury came out with a simple fix 1986 , water cooled fuel lines. and yes this solved my problem , Mercury actually paid to have these issues fixed . My problem was if u went to a July4th fire works show on the river and many boats around u actually had to crank up/ cut off from slow current on the river to keep from hitting other boats .TR
